Tras el antecedente de la carrera de 2014, en donde Jules Bianchi pierde el control de su auto en la curva N°7 e impacta con una grúa que se encontraba recogiendo otro auto accidentado y fallece al año siguiente debido a las secuelas de este incidente, los pilotos se vieron muy disgustados por la presencia de una grúa en pista mientras los coches circulaban.

Pierre Gasly fue el que mayor expresó su enojo por esto públicamente. El piloto francés fue quien corrió el mayor peligro al ser el que pasó a mayor velocidad por la zona donde se encontraba la grúa recogiendo el auto de Carlos Sainz, quien se accidentó en la primera vuelta. En esta ocasión, no hubo aviso a los pilotos de que había una grúa en pista, y parece ser que los equipos tampoco lo sabían.

Aunque Leclerc terminara segundo, los puntos repartidos de esta manera no eran suficientes para coronar a Verstappen aún con victoria de su parte. Pero la FIA sorprende a todos al aclarar que esta disminución de puntos se da sólo si la carrera termina bajo bandera roja o suspensión y no si termina en condiciones normales, es decir, con los autos cruzando la bandera a cuadros.
