El Gran Premio de Arabia Saudita nos deja las expectativas de un campeonato que se peleará entre dos equipos, carrera a carrera, piloto a piloto, en lo que será la temporada más larga de la Fórmula 1.

Ya no fue ni Max Verstappen ni Charles Leclerc el dueño de la Pole Position. Esta vez, el piloto mexicano Sergio Pérez, compañero de Max en Red Bull, quien partió en primera posición.

Esto demuestra que Pérez está en un buen momento, se siente cómodo con su auto, y tiene buen rendimiento en carrera. La Pole siempre había sido un punto débil para él, y lograrla en una pista tan difícil como la de Jeddah, frente a Leclerc y Verstappen, es toda una hazaña.

Pérez pierde el primer lugar en boxes ¿Perdió Red Bull el 1-2?

Sergio Pérez partió bien y mantuvo el primer lugar durante la primera parte de la carrera. Parecía que Leclerc no era capaz de acercarse. Max Verstappen, patiendo 4° tras una mala vuelta de Qualy 3 en clasificación, logra quitarle el 3° puesto a Sainz en la largada.

Todo indicaba que Pérez era el principal candidato a la victoria. Sin embargo, Red Bull le ordena entrar a Pits para el cambio de neumáticos, tras un 'amago' de Ferrari por radio. Puede parecer que Red Bull de dejó engañar estratégicamente, pero lo cierto es que Pérez estaba sufriendo mucho desgaste, algo que Ferrari sufre menos que Red Bull.

¿Hasta qué punto Red Bull se dejó 'engañar' por Ferrari? Al parecer la parada de Pérez estaba ya predeterminada, no fueron engañados por Ferrari. Sin embargo, queda la incógnita ¿Pérez ya no cuida tan bien los neumáticos en Red Bull? Ocurrió algo similar en el pasado Gran Premio de Bahréin, Pérez fue llamado a boxes teniendo neumáticos más duros que Verstappen y las dos Ferrari, con la misma cantidad de vueltas.

En el deporte a motor a veces puedes tener mala suerte, y esto le sucedió a Sergio Pérez en este Gran Premio. Lattifi tuvo un accidente justo cuando Pérez salía de boxes, obligando a la salida del Safety Car, haciendo que Leclerc, Verstappen y Sainz tengan una parada 'gratis', perdiendo poco tiempo. Pérez pasó del 1° al 4°, sin poder hacer nada. Y allí permaneció hasta el final de la carrera.

Siendo un circuito donde adelantar es difícil, y estando tan igualados estos 4 pilotos en rendimiento, Pérez no pudo recuperar posiciones. Además, los neumáticos nuevos no le sentaron tan bien. Si Pérez paraba una vuelta después quizás la historia sería otra.

Victoria de Max Verstappen

La pelea entre Max Verstappen y Charles Leclerc fue de nuevo el foco de atención en esta carrera. Esta vez, el vencedor fue Max, logrando adelantar a Leclerc en las últimas vueltas de la carrera.

Ferrari tiene probablemente el auto mejor balanceado de la parrilla. Tiene velocidad en curva, en recta, eficiencia aerodinámica, etc. Pero Red Bull acertó respecto a un punto en específico en este circuito: la velocidad punta. Red Bull no deja de tener un auto eficiente aerodinámicamente, pero quisieron explotar mejor la potencia de su motor esta temporada, lo cual se vio reflejado en que eran el equipo más rápido en el 2do y 3er sector de Jeddah.

Ferrari dominaba las curvas lentas, pero Red Bull dominó en las zonas rápidas, en las cuales se dan los adelantamientos. Esto fue clave, ya que Max Verstappen tuvo mucha más facilidad para adelantar a Leclerc que cualquiera de las Ferrari a los Red Bull. Una vez pasó Verstappen adelante, ya era muy difícil para Leclerc igualar la velocidad del Red Bull en recta.

Esta pelea por el primer lugar entre Max y Charles puedo haber sido la pelea por el 2° lugar si Pérez paraba una vuelta después. Por ello, quizás Red Bull perdió, por mala suerte, un posible 1-2. Aunque hay que destacar que el ritmo de 'Checo' en la segunda parte de la carrera no fue suficiente para pasar a Sainz.

Falta ver a Sainz

Si bien Pérez aún no tiene podios esta temporada, lo hemos visto estar allí arriba, y sabemos que es bien capaz de ganar al menos una carrera esta temporada. Sainz, en cambio, ha logrado dos podios. Sin embargo, no ha brillado tanto como su compañero de equipo esta temporada. Sabemos que Sainz no se ha sentido tan cómodo esta temporada con su auto. Sufrió porpoising durante las prácticas del Gran Premio de Arabia.

No cabe duda de que Carlos Sainz logrará muchos más podios esta temporada, y porqué no, su primera victoria en la Fórmula 1. Lo que esperamos es que se sume en las próximas carreras como un candidato sólido a la victoria. Ya Sainz fue capaz de superar a Leclerc en 2021, y sabemos que eventualmente puede sumarse a la batalla por la victoria en las próximas carreras.

La presente temporada nos recuerda al año 2007, cuando 4 pilotos, de Ferrari y McLaren, peleaban por la victoria. Y podrían ser 6 pilotos si eventualmente Mercedes se recupera. Recordemos que en 2010 5 pilotos llegaron a la última carrera con posibilidad de ser campeones.

Una zona media caótica

Ocon y Alonso, dejaron mucho nerviosismo en el equipo Alpine tras pelear en pista. Ocon vuelve a mostrar su lado más agresivo, recordándonos sus encontronazos con Pérez hace unos años. Esto no es algo positivo si se trata de tu propio compañero de equipo, lo cual es algo a revisar en el equipo francés. El equipo pudo haber sumado una buena cantidad de puntos si Alonso no hubiera sufrido un desperfecto mecánico que le obligó a abandonar.

Esta carrera supuso mucho caos en media tabla, puesto que hubo muchos abandonos por problemas mecánicos, y contínuas peleas en pista entre pilotos como Zhou, Stroll, Magnussen, Hamilton y otros. Magnussen vuelve a brillar con Haas, sumando 2 puntos con un 9° lugar. Bien por Norris, llevando su McLaren a los puntos, y mal por Zhou, quien tuvo una carrera lllena de sanciones que le impidieron sumar puntos. El piloto chino no supo aprovechar la potencia de su auto.

Los cambios aerodinámicos de 2022 no tuvieron tanto efecto en esta pista

En el pasado Gran Premio de Bahréin pudimos ver a los autos muy de cerca entre sí. En diversas ocasiones en la media tabla se formaba un 'enjambre' en Sakhir. En esta carrera, quizás por lo estrecho de la pista, no pudimos ver lo mismo. Además, la cantidad de adelantamientos en pista no pareció variar mucho respecto al año pasado.

Tuvimos una primera vuelta muy limpia, sin accidentes. Los pilotos fueron muy prudentes, es algo a destacar en la Fórmula 1 de los últimos años. Quizás si hubo mayor facilidad para las peleas en pista, Verstappen y Leclerc se notaron más 'cómodos' para adelantarse entre sí que Max y Hamilton el pasado año.

Personalmente, esperaba nuevas zonas de adelantamiento respecto al año pasado, lo cual no se presentó, quizás debido a lo estrecho y rápido de las curvas del circuito. Las curvas de Sakhir son más lentas. Las curvas de Jeddah son rápidas, y es difícil adelantar bajo continuas curvas de alta velocidad, lo cual es muy diferente que rectas y curvas de media-baja velocidad del circuito de Bahréin.

El Gran Premio de Australia será dentro de 2 semanas. El Albert Park es un circuito muy diferente a estos primeros dos en medio oriente. Además, el circuito australiano ha sido ligeramente modificado, lo cual cambiará un poco la dinmámica de la carrera. Veremos cual equipo (Ferrari o Red Bull) se adaptará mejor en Australia. Por lo pronto, será otra batalla igualada entre Verstappen, Leclerc, Pérez y Sainz.

Perez loses first place in the pits. Did Red Bull lose 1-2?

Sergio Perez started well and held the first place for the first part of the race. It seemed that Leclerc was not able to get close. Max Verstappen, running 4th after a bad Qualy 3 lap in qualifying, managed to take 3rd place from Sainz at the start.

It may seem that Red Bull was strategically fooled, but the truth is that Perez was suffering a lot of wear, something that Ferrari suffers less than Red Bull.

To what extent was Red Bull 'fooled' by Ferrari? Apparently Perez's stop was already predetermined, they were not fooled by Ferrari. However, the question remains, does Perez no longer take such good care of the tires at Red Bull? Something similar happened in the last Bahrain Grand Prix, Perez was called to pit having harder tires than Verstappen and the two Ferraris, with the same amount of laps.

In motorsport sometimes you can get unlucky, and this happened to Sergio Perez in this Grand Prix. Being a circuit where overtaking is difficult, and these 4 drivers being so evenly matched in performance, Perez could not recover positions. Besides, the new tires did not suit him so well. If Perez stopped one lap later, maybe the story would be different.

Max Verstappen's victory

The fight between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc was again the focus of attention in this race. This time, the winner was Max, managing to overtake Leclerc in the last laps of the race.

Ferrari has probably the best balanced car on the grid. It has cornering speed, straight line speed, aerodynamic efficiency, etc. But Red Bull got it right on one specific point on this circuit: top speed. Ferrari dominated the slow corners, but Red Bull dominated in the fast areas, where overtaking takes place. This was key, as Max Verstappen had a much easier time overtaking Leclerc than any of the Ferraris had overtaking the Red Bulls. Once Verstappen passed Verstappen in front, it was already very difficult for Leclerc to match the Red Bull's speed on the straights.

This fight for first place between Max and Charles could have been the fight for 2nd place if Perez stopped a lap later. Therefore, perhaps Red Bull lost, by bad luck, a possible 1-2. Although it should be noted that the pace of 'Checo' in the second part of the race was not enough to pass Sainz.

Sainz is still to be seen

The current season reminds us of 2007, when 4 drivers, from Ferrari and McLaren, were fighting for the victory. And it could be 6 drivers if eventually Mercedes recovers. Let's remember that in 2010 5 drivers reached the last race with a chance to be champions.

A chaotic middle zone

Ocon and Alonso left a lot of nervousness in the Alpine team after fighting on track. Ocon again showed his aggressive side, reminding us of his clashes with Perez a few years ago. This is not a good thing if it is your own teammate, which is something to check at the French team. The team could have scored a good amount of points if Alonso had not suffered a mechanical failure that forced him to retire.

This race involved a lot of mid-table chaos, as there were many retirements due to mechanical problems, and continuous on-track fights between drivers such as Zhou, Stroll, Magnussen, Hamilton and others. Magnussen shines again with Haas, scoring 2 points with a 9th place. Good for Norris, taking his McLaren to the points, and bad for Zhou, who had a race full of penalties that prevented him from scoring points. The Chinese driver did not know how to take advantage of the power of his car.

2022 aerodynamic changes did not have as much effect on this track

At the Bahrain Grand Prix last week we saw the cars in close proximity to each other. On several occasions in the midfield a 'swarm' was formed at Sakhir. In this race, perhaps because of the tightness of the track, we could not see the same. Also, the amount of overtaking on track didn't seem to vary much from last year.

We had a very clean first lap, with no accidents. The drivers were very cautious, which is something to highlight in Formula 1 in recent years. Perhaps if there was more ease for on-track fights, Verstappen and Leclerc seemed more 'comfortable' to overtake each other than Max and Hamilton last year.

Personally, I was expecting new overtaking zones compared to last year, which was not present, perhaps due to the tight and fast corners of the circuit. Sakhir's corners are slower. Jeddah's corners are fast, and it is difficult to overtake under continuous high-speed corners, which is very different from the straights and medium-low speed corners of the Bahrain circuit.

The Australian Grand Prix will be in 2 weeks. Albert Park is a very different circuit from these first two in the Middle East. In addition, the Australian circuit has been slightly modified, which will change a bit the dynamics of the race. We will see which team (Ferrari or Red Bull) will adapt better in Australia. For now, it will be another close battle between Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez and Sainz.
