The Tryp Habana Libre Hotel is one of the most renowned hotels in Cuba. It is located in the center of the Rampa Capitalina, on the corner of L and 23, in Vedado, although it covers the block comprising M and 25th streets. With its imposing height and architectural design, it stands out in the city's panorama.

Recently, I attended some seminars in the "Los Embajadores" hall of this hotel, which is what motivated me to tell you about it. I had not visited it since my college days, when I used to go to Las Cañitas bar, located near the pool, lively and affordable. Upon entering the hotel, I relived memories of my youth and appreciated its elegant and glamorous design, even though it is now less crowded than before.

El Hotel Tryp Habana Libre es uno de los más renombrados de Cuba. Está ubicado en el centro de la Rampa Capitalina, en la esquina de L y 23, de Vedado, aunque abarca la manzana que comprende las calles M y 25. Con su imponente altura y diseño arquitectónico, destaca en el panorama de la ciudad.

Recientemente, asistí a unos seminarios en el salón "Los Embajadores" de este hotel, fue lo que me motivó a hablarles de él. No lo visitaba desde mis tiempos de estudiante universitario, cuando solía ir al bar Las Cañitas, situado cerca de la piscina, animado y asequible. Al entrar en el hotel, reviví recuerdos de mi juventud y pude apreciar su diseño elegante y glamuroso, aunque ahora esté menos concurrido que antes.

This hotel was built by the American hotel chain Hilton, completed on March 29, 1958 under the name Habana Hilton. In 1960 it changed its name to Habana Libre, until 1996, when a management agreement was established with the Sol Meliá chain and it was renamed Hotel Trip Habana Libre, a name it retains to this day. It has 25 floors, 630 rooms, 42 suites, and on the lower levels of the hotel there are two levels of subway parking. The hotel is huge and has several bars and restaurants. Below, I will share the places I had access to, paying special attention to the design of the common areas.

En 1960 cambió su nombre por el de Habana Libre, hasta que en 1996 se estableció un acuerdo de gestión con la cadena Sol Meliá y pasó a llamarse Hotel Trip Habana Libre, nombre que conserva hasta hoy. Tiene 25 plantas, 630 habitaciones, 42 suites, y en los niveles inferiores del hotel hay dos niveles de aparcamiento subterráneo. El hotel es enorme y tiene varios bares y restaurantes. At the entrance of the hotel, there is a large mural by Cuban artist Amelia Peláez and several palm trees, which give a Cuban touch to this modern high-rise building. Upon entering, to the right is an elegant and well-lit reception area, where the staff is always ready to serve visitors. However, my attention was constantly drawn to the right, where there is a central area under a huge dome. It is a simply beautiful effect that I stopped to appreciate, despite my haste to get to the seminary on time. In that central courtyard, there is plenty of seating, greenery and thick marble-clad columns surrounding it.

Al entrar, a la derecha se encuentra una elegante y bien iluminada recepción, donde el personal está siempre listo para atender a los visitantes. Sin embargo, mi atención se dirigía constantemente hacia la derecha, donde hay un área central bajo una enorme cúpula. Es un efecto simplemente hermoso queme detuve a apreciar, a pesar de mi prisa por llegar al seminario a tiempo. I quickly climbed a wide and singular staircase of wooden covered steps with thick aluminum handrails and snowy crystals, which gave elegance to the place. I reached the second floor and went to the "Los Embajadores" hall, a large space composed of three rooms used for various events, meetings and conferences, well equipped for these purposes, with large lamps hanging from the ceiling and carpet-covered floors. I personally attended two of them.

Subí rápidamente una amplia y singular escalera de peldaños revestidos de madera con gruesos pasamanos de aluminio y cristales nevados, que daban elegancia al lugar. Llegué a la segunda planta y me dirigí al salón "Los Embajadores", un amplio espacio compuesto por tres salas utilizadas para diversos actos, reuniones y conferencias, bien equipadas para estos fines, con grandes lámparas colgando del techo y suelos cubiertos de alfombras. Asistí personalmente a dos de ellas.

On the way out, I walked through the whole place and found it to be very cozy. These two floors housed most of the hotel's common areas. There were beautiful black and white vases that harmonized with the modern and spacious surroundings, where the floors were black and white and the chandeliers followed the same style. The wide corridors offered comfortable seating, and the walls displayed murals by renowned artists such as Alfredo Sosa Bravo, René Portocarrero and Nelson Domínguez, among others. All of this made us feel removed from the hustle and bustle of the hotel's central location.

Al salir, recorrí todo el lugar y me pareció muy acogedor. Estas dos plantas albergaban la mayor parte de las zonas comunes del hotel. Había hermosos jarrones en blanco y negro que armonizaban con el entorno moderno y espacioso, donde los suelos eran blancos y negros y las lámparas seguían el mismo estilo. Los amplios pasillos ofrecían cómodos asientos, y las paredes exhibían murales de artistas de renombre como Alfredo Sosa Bravo, René Portocarrero y Nelson Domínguez, entre otros. I went to "Las Cañitas", but was disappointed to see it so empty. The sales clerks explained to me that the influx of people increased late in the day. The place has a circular structure with glass walls showing designs of sugar cane plantations. The bar is round and lined with imitation cane wood. On the wall opposite the bar are beautiful works of art depicting humanity from different cultures.

Fui a "Las Cañitas", pero me decepcionó verlo tan vacío. Los dependientes me explicaron que la afluencia de publico aumentaba a última hora del día. El local tiene una estructura circular con paredes de cristal que muestran diseños de plantaciones de caña de azúcar. La barra es redonda y está forrada con imitación de madera de caña. En la pared opuesta a la barra hay hermosas obras de arte que representan a la humanidad de diferentes culturas.

Next to "Las Cañitas", through a glass door, you can access the hotel's swimming pool. It is located at one end and is very beautiful and simple. It is surrounded by comfortable loungers, and looking up you can see all the floors of the hotel. On the other side of the pool, under some pergolas, there is a gastronomic stand called "El Mangle" that also offers service to the pool. Also, on another wall I found another mural.

Junto a "Las Cañitas", a través de una puerta de cristal, se accede a la piscina del hotel. Está ubicada en uno de los extremos y es muy hermosa y sencilla. Está rodeada de cómodas tumbonas, y al mirar hacia arriba se pueden ver todos los pisos del hotel. Al otro lado de la piscina, bajo unas pérgolas, hay un puesto gastronómico llamado "El Mangle" que también ofrece servicio a la piscina. Además, en otra pared encontré otro mural.

I descended the striking staircase, which despite its large size, I only noticed a support point on a thick column.

On that level there are several themed bars and restaurants offering a variety of cocktails and a wide range of gastronomic offerings, from Cuban to international. One of them, "El Patio", imitates the architecture of colonial Havana and looks very refined, but I was looking forward to seeing "El Barracón", which has a large painting in the background that looks like a beautiful country landscape through the glass. It has a picturesque ambiance, with a wooden carved entrance door of leafy trees and palms, a decor that evokes a country house with stove, yarey hats and baskets, horseback riding saddles, stone walls and wooden ceilings. On the way out, its decoration contrasts with the spaciousness of the enormous corridors.

En ese nivel hay varios bares y restaurantes temáticos que ofrecen cócteles variados y una amplia oferta gastronómica, desde cubana hasta internacional. Uno de ellos, "El Patio", imita la arquitectura de La Habana colonial y parece muy refinado, pero yo estaba deseando ver "El Barracón", que tiene un gran cuadro al fondo que parece un hermoso paisaje campestre a través del cristal. Finally, on my way out, I passed by the hotel's ample shopping arcade, where such well-known brands as Puma, Adidas, Converse, as well as boutiques, perfumeries and an international drugstore are located.

The Trip Habana Libre Hotel is a Cuban landmark that has retained its charm and elegance over the years. Its impressive architectural design, with its imposing height and its elegant and cozy common areas, make it a special place to stay and enjoy an unforgettable experience in the Cuban capital.
