HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 64 First Round (ENG-ESP): "King of Pain" The Police / Alanis Morissette

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 64 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

From weeks 61 to 63, I chose to do songs that Bob Dylan recorded, that were then made more famous by cover artists, including “All Along the Watchtower”, “House of the Rising Sun” (Modern chord arrangement by Dave van Ronk) and “Rock Me Mama/Wagon Wheel”. I thought for weeks 64 to 66 (and maybe beyond), why don’t I do something similar and tackle some songs that were originally released by one artist or band, but have a very successful famous cover version released by another band or artist? I can then show you both versions and you let me know which one you prefer!

I have already done many songs like this for the Hive Music Festival, let’s go back in time to think of some examples!

Haha, oh wow – sorry, there were far more examples than I remembered! I’ve done a lot of Bob Dylan lately, but could easily come back to more of his songs that have been famously covered such as “Mr Tambourine Man” (The Byrds), “Knocking on Heavens Door” (Guns & Roses) or “Blowing in the Wind” (All sorts of artists!).

Let’s rather try and think of some other artists that have had their wonderful songs covered by other successful and talented artists. Today I would like to start with Sting & the Police and their beautiful song “King of Pain” – please check it out here:

In 1999, Alanis Morissette was invited to play at one of MTV’s legendary “Unplugged” concerts (Think of the Nirvana, Eric Clapton ones!). Towards the end, she whipped out her cover of “King of Pain”. Check out some of the comments on this video below:

Quite a few people are saying it’s one of the best covers they’ve ever heard.

So! Which one do you prefer? The original by Sting & the Police or the cover by Alanis Morissette?

De las semanas 61 a 63, elegí hacer canciones que Bob Dylan grabó, que luego se hicieron más famosas gracias a los covers, incluyendo “All Along the Watchtower”, “House of the Rising Sun” (arreglo de acordes modernos de Dave van Ronk). y “Rock Me Mama/Wagon Wheel”. Jaja, vaya, lo siento, ¡había muchos más ejemplos de los que recordaba!
