There are stages in life when you are determined to leave the smock of the cars and go to a solitary place, sit under a tree and surrender yourself completely to the silence of mother earth. Stages in which you truly see how loving and healing nature is with you every time you turn to her. That is why I have decided that every moment that life allows me to take those little getaways I would go to celebrate my existence in a river with cold water, climbing mountains or simply hugging trees.

Hay etapas de la vida en la que te empeñas dejar el smock de los carros e ir a un lugar solitario, sentarte bajo un árbol y entregarte por completo al silencio de la madre tierra. Etapas en la que en verdad ves lo amorosa y sanadora que es la naturaleza contigo cada vez que acudes hacia ella. Por ello he decidido que cada momento que la vida me permita dar esas pequeñas escapadas iría a celebrar mi existencia en un río con agua fría, escalando montañas o simplemente abrazando árboles.

So the time has come to go exploring in the majestic Cotopaxi volcano which is located in the city of Latacunga in the Cotopaxi National Park. For those who do not know this volcano is one of the most visited places in Ecuador and is located at 5,897 meters above sea level, so as many will imagine, we hope to reach the summit, which is quite a challenge, because you have to be physically prepared. As a first point I am not an expert in travel or trekking, I am just someone who is stopping being fearful to dare to do new things.

On this occasion I thought it would be more interesting if I went to the volcano in the company of more people; so I chose to do a tour with the team of "Killary travel" with a price of $ 25 dollars per person, which includes: round trip transportation, visit to the slopes of the volcano, visit to the Jose Rivas refuge which is located at 4864 meters above sea level, visit to the Limpiopungo Lagoon, visit to a museum and lunch.

The tour starts at 8:00 am with a visit to the interpretative museum, where some of the guides inform about the flora, fauna and volcanoes that are around the Cotopaxi National Park. At this time I took the opportunity to capture some photos of what would be the journey to the paramo.

Así que llegó el momento de ir a explorar en el majestuoso volcán Cotopaxi que está ubicado en la ciudad de Latacunga en el parque Nacional de Cotopaxi. Para quienes no conozcan este volcán es uno de los lugares más visitados del Ecuador y se encuentra a los 5.897 metros sobre el nivel del mar, así que como se imaginarán muchos, tenemos la esperanza de llegar a la cumbre, lo cual es todo un reto, ya que hay que estar preparado físicamente. Como primer punto no soy una experta en viajes o senderismo, solo soy alguien que está dejando de ser temeroso para atreverse a hacer cosas nuevas.

En esta ocasión pensé que sería más interesante si iría al volcán en compañía de más personas; así pues, elegí hacer un tour con el equipo de “Killary travel” con un precio de $25 dólares por persona, en el que incluye: transporte de ida y vuelta, visita a las faldas del volcán, visita al refugio Jose Rivas que se encuentra a los 4864 msnm, visita a la Laguna de Limpiopungo, visita a un museo y un almuerzo.

El recorrido inicia a las 8:00 am con la visita al museo interpretativo, en el que algunas de las guías informan de la flora, fauna y de los volcanes que están alrededor del parque nacional Cotopaxi. En este momento aproveché para capturar algunas fotos de lo que sería el recorrido hacia el páramo.

The day did not seem to be ideal to go to Cotopaxi and appreciate all its splendor, there was a lot of fog. However, the weather is usually varied, so in a matter of seconds the day clears up and it is a good time to take some pictures, so we were hopeful that as the hours passed we would be able to enjoy the scenic advantage that the place has to offer.

The guides decided to do something about it while the bus was moving towards the slopes of the volcano, they thought that doing a ritual dance to Inti Raymi would be a way to release bad vibes and get permission from mother earth to be worthy of seeing the majestic volcano. With the song "zapateando Juyayay" we got up from the bus seat and moved our skeletons a little. In this state, we had fun with this song that is very nationalistic and has now become a hymn.

El día no aparentaba ser idóneo como para ir al Cotopaxi y apreciar de todo su esplendor, había mucha neblina. Sin embargo, el clima suele ser variado, por lo que en cuestiones de segundos el día se despeja y es un buen momento para tomar algunas fotografías, así que teníamos la esperanza que con el transcurrir de las horas podremos gozar de la ventaja paisajística que el lugar tiene para ofrecer.

Los guías decidieron hacer algo al respecto mientras el bus daba marcha hacia las faldas del volcán, pensaron que hacer un ritual mediante una danza al Inti Raymi sería una forma de soltar malas vibras y obtener el permiso de la madre tierra para ser dignos de ver al majestuoso volcán. Con la canción “zapateando Juyayay” nos levantamos del asiento del bus y movimos un poco el esqueleto. En este, ínstate nos divertimos con esta canción que es muy nacionalista y ahora se ha convertido en todo un himno.

We were all very happy after having danced the Juyayayay, too bad it did not last long, because as the bus began to ascend towards the parking lot of Cotopaxi, it began to sway from one side to the other and each time I felt like the oxygen was decreasing. On the way we found some cars that were left on the road without power, so it is always recommended to go in a car that has good power in the engines.

The bus went up without any problems and once we arrived at the parking lot, the next objective was to walk to the José Rivas refuge, which is a few meters from the glacier of the volcano. Well, even with all the ritual we did before, we would not have it so easy to get to the refuge.

Todos quedamos muy alegres después de haber bailado el Juyayay, lástima que nos duró muy poco, ya que a medida que el bus comenzaba ascender hacia el estacionamiento del Cotopaxi, comenzó a balancearse de un lado para otro y cada vez sentía como el oxígeno iba disminuyendo. En el camino nos encontramos con algunos carros que se quedaban en el camino sin fuerza, por eso siempre se recomienda ir en un carro que tenga buena potencia en los motores.

El bus subió sin novedad alguna y una vez que llegamos al estacionamiento, el próximo objetivo fue arribar caminando al refugio José Rivas, que está a pocos metros del glaciar del volcán. Pues ni con todo el ritual que hicimos anteriormente llegar al refugio la tendríamos muy tan fácil.

The route to the refuge was really like making a viacrucis and for a moment it was like defying death, since not all lungs are prepared to withstand the altitude that the place has. The problem of living near this volcano is that you think you are prepared in terms of atmospheric resistance and climb without any problem. Which was my mistake, making this assumption, since it took me too long to get to the site, the wind and the fog made me concentrate only on staying calm and going slowly.

Realmente la ruta hacia el refugio fue como hacer un viacrucis y por un momento fue como desafiar a la muerte, ya que no todos los pulmones están preparados para resistir a la altura que el lugar posee. El problema de vivir cerca de este volcán es que crees que estás preparado en cuestiones de resistencia atmosférica y subir sin ningún problema. Lo cual fue un error mío, hacer esta suposición, puesto que me costó demasiado llegar al sitio, el viento y la neblina hacía que únicamente se concentrará en mantener la calma e ir despacio.

After a lot of luck I arrived at the refuge, where you can regain energy, take a breath and drink something hot. There are several foods that the site offers, one of them is coca leaf tea, which is recommended to calm the dizziness in places of great heights. Some of the people settle for several days and here they prepare themselves if their next goal is to reach the summit of the volcano. Maybe in a next occasion I will be encouraged to make the trek to the summit, for now it has been enough, so it was time to descend in the company of the whole Killary team.

Después de mucha suerte llegué al refugio, en donde puedes recomponer energías, tomar aliento y beber algo caliente. Hay diversos alimentos que el sitio ofrece, uno de ellos es el té de hoja de coca, el cual se recomienda para calmar el mareo en lugares de grandes alturas. Algunas de las personas se establecen por varios días y aquí se preparan si su próximo objetivo es llegar a la cumbre del volcán. Tal vez en una próxima ocasión me anime a hacer el recorrido a la cumbre, por ahora ha sido suficiente, así que llegó el momento de descender en compañía de todo el equipo Killary.

Our next stop was to go to the limpiopungo lagoon which is located inside the Cotopaxi national park. Being here was very quiet and we managed to get beautiful shots of the lagoon next to the Cotopaxi volcano and the Rumiñahui volcano which is also part of the landscape. On this road we encountered an endemic species of the place is the Andean fox, which lately is being domesticated because visitors often give them food. This has been a problem, since the Andean fox by nature is a hunter being part of the food chain. In the end, the day never cleared completely, so we were never able to capture the volcano from the Limpiopungo Lagoon valley.

Nuestra próxima parada fue ir a la laguna de limpiopungo el cual se encuentra dentro del parque nacional Cotopaxi. Estar aquí fue mucho tranquilo y se logró obtener hermosas tomas de la laguna junto al volcán Cotopaxi y el volcán Rumiñahui que también es parte del paisaje. En este camino nos encontramos con una especie endémica del lugar se trata del zorro andino, que últimamente se está domesticando debido a que los visitantes suelen darles comida. Este ha sido un problema, ya que el zorro andino por naturaleza es un cazador siendo parte de la cadena alimenticia. Al final de cuentas el día nunca se despejó por completo, por ende tampoco se logró capturar al volcán desde el valle de la laguna Limpiopungo.

Finally, we went to eat at a restaurant called "Mirador de los Volcanes" since it is very close to the area. Arriving there was a surprise when my eyes saw a table in the shape of a banquet, from ancient times, huge, with a fireplace, candles and everything very nice. I couldn't see the menu because the food was included in the tour, but I knew there was pork and roast lamb. The food was a total plus, especially the "locro de papa" soup, a warming meal that was delicious. There is nothing more comforting than finding delicious food after an adventurous day.

Finalmente, fuimos a comer en un restaurante denominado “Mirador de los Volcanes” puesto que está muy cerca de la zona. Llegar ahí fue una sorpresa cuando mis ojos vieron una mesa en forma de banquete, de épocas antiguas, enorme, con chimenea, velas y todo bien bonito. No pude ver el menú porque la comida incluía en el tour, pero supe que había carne de cerdo y borrego asado. La comida fue un total plus, especialmente la sopa “locro de papa” una comida que abriga el cuerpo y estaba muy deliciosa. No hay nada más reconfortante que encontrar comida deliciosa después de un día aventurero.

Visiting the Cotopaxi volcano has been a unique experience, for a moment I felt that the wind would blow my room, I was short of breath, in short, I was tired, but if there is the opportunity to return, I would do it. For me celebrating life is not only buying new clothes, giving gifts, but also finding moments of happiness in every corner that nature has to offer.

Visitar al volcán Cotopaxi ha sido una experiencia única, por un momento sentía que el viento vecería mi cuarto, la respiración faltaba, en pocas palabras, estaba cansado, pero si hay la oportunidad de volver, lo haría. Para mí celebrar la vida no es únicamente comprar ropa nueva, dar regalos, sino también encontrar momentos de felicidad en cada rincón que la naturaleza tiene para ofrecer.
