HIVE OPEN MIC #179 (ENG/ESP): Urban Music - "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X (feat Billy Ray Cyrus)

Welcome to Week 179 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is the is “Urban Music”!

“Urban Music”? What is that? Songs about cities like “New York New York” by Frank Sinatra or “Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen? Or perhaps this is supposed to be an entire week devoted to covers of songs by Keith Urban! Hahaha!

So, I asked my good friend Google what it thought… and it turns out that “Urban Music” is another name for what used to be the “Urban Contemporary” classification of music (like at the Grammy Awards…)

Apparently, the phrase “Urban Contemporary” has been criticized lately for its racial undertones… The classification has been seen to put all music that is stereotypically for an African-American audience (more likely to live in the inner-cities of the USA than in the countryside) and music by African-American artists into a single box, even though it can include a variety of genres from R&B, to Hip-hop, to rap, to funk.

The “Urban Contemporary” label is seen as problematic. By the early 2000s, a lot of these genres were popular with the mainstream (and not just African American people) anyway. Also, some African American artists have had their songs classed in this category when they don’t identify with it and think their song would be classified in a different genre if they had been a “white artist” instead.

A good example of this is “Old Town Road” by Lil. Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus. This viral song sounds like a brilliant mixture of rap and country music to me. However, I was surprised to learn (https://www.thenationalnews.com/arts-culture/music/a-history-of-denial-the-problem-with-the-term-urban-music-1.1031206) that the song was denied a place on the Billboard Hot Country Songs for lacking “enough elements of today’s country music.” Even the guest artist, Billy Ray Cyrus, who is Mr. Country Music himself (he is the man behind “Achey Breaky Heart” and happens to be Miley Cyrus’s father) said that the decision “smelt of cultural gate-keeping”. In my mind, he is saying that the song would be a country song… if a white artist had released it!

¿“Música Urbana”? ¿Qué es eso? ¿Canciones sobre ciudades como “Nueva York Nueva York” de Frank Sinatra o “Filadelfia” de Bruce Springsteen? ¡O tal vez se supone que será una semana entera dedicada a versiones de canciones de Keith Urban! ¡Jajaja!

Entonces, le pregunté a mi buen amigo Google qué pensaba… y resulta que “Música Urbana” es otro nombre para lo que solía ser la clasificación de música “Urbana Contemporánea” (como en los Premios Grammy…)

Aparentemente, la frase “Urban Contemporary” ha sido criticada últimamente por sus matices raciales… Se ha visto que la clasificación pone toda la música que es estereotípicamente para una audiencia afroamericana (más probable que viva en los barrios marginales de los EE. UU. que en el campo) y música de artistas afroamericanos en una sola caja, aunque puede incluir una variedad de géneros, desde R&B hasta hip-hop, rap y funk.

La etiqueta “urbano contemporáneo” se considera problemática. A principios de la década de 2000, muchos de estos géneros eran populares entre la corriente principal (y no solo entre los afroamericanos). Además, algunos artistas afroamericanos han clasificado sus canciones en esta categoría cuando no se identifican con ella y piensan que su canción se clasificaría en un género diferente si hubieran sido un “artista blanco”.

Un buen ejemplo de esto es “Old Town Road” de Lil. Nas X con Billy Ray Cyrus. Esta canción viral me suena como una brillante mezcla de rap y música country. Sin embargo, me sorprendió saber (https://www.thenationalnews.com/arts-culture/music/a-history-of-denial-the-problem-with-the-term-urban-music-1.1031206) que el A la canción se le negó un lugar en Billboard Hot Country Songs por carecer de "suficientes elementos de la música country actual". Incluso el artista invitado, Billy Ray Cyrus, que es el mismísimo Mr. Country Music (es el hombre detrás de “Achey Breaky Heart” y resulta ser el padre de Miley Cyrus) dijo que la decisión “olía a control cultural”. En mi opinión, está diciendo que la canción sería una canción country... ¡si la hubiera lanzado un artista blanco!
