HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 38 Second Round (ENG-ESP): "Wonderful Tonight" featuring "The mini Kora"

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 38 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, I started playing covers after running our of original material. But I thought I would make a special effort for my HMF friends and challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the 16th instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

So far, we have had:

1. The Kazoo
2. The Pennywhistle
3. The Autoharp
4. The xylophone / glockenspiel
5. The Valiha (bamboo zither)
6. The ukelele
7. The piano sample sounds from the “Bongo Cat” Website
8. Random stuff I found in my kitchen
9. My toddler daughter’s baby-piano toy and rainstick
10. An antique wooden recorder
11. 25L Plastic Water drums (remnants of Cape Town’s water crisis)
12. Wine bottle whistles!
13. Exercise bands and rubber bands
14. The washboard
15. The handgun

Now it is time for the 16th “Instrument of the Week” – A mini (tourist-souvenir) kora!

My mother once did work in Burkina Faso and came back with a mini tourist souvenir version of a kora with 6 rather muted out-of-tune strings. Now, a real kora is a West African traditional instrument that is usually much bigger, with 21 strings (or more) that can be tuned to sound like a mixture between a lute and a harp!

With this one, I couldn’t do much to tune it besides shift the bridge around which would affect all 6 strings rather than just the one, so forgive me if it doesn’t sound perfect, but I still got it close enough that I could use it to add some flavour to play a (very muted staccato) version of the famous riff from Eric Clapton’s beautiful song: “Wonderful Tonight”!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 38 / Ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, comencé a tocar versiones después de ejecutar nuestro material original. Pero pensé en hacer un esfuerzo especial por mis amigos de HMF y desafiarme así: Mis instrumentos principales son la guitarra y las armónicas: ¿Qué pasaría si tuviera que asegurarme de que por cada versión que haga para el Hive Music Festival durante las próximas semanas, que también debo usar un instrumento diferente, para probar mi creatividad y habilidad para aprender y tocar con diferentes sonidos nuevos?

Ahora es el momento del 16º "Instrumento de la semana": ¡una mini kora (recuerdo turístico)!

Mi madre una vez trabajó en Burkina Faso y regresó con una versión de recuerdo para turistas en miniatura de una kora con 6 cuerdas desafinadas bastante apagadas. Ahora, una kora real es un instrumento tradicional de África occidental que suele ser mucho más grande, con 21 cuerdas (o más) que se pueden afinar para que suene como una mezcla entre un laúd y un arpa.

Con este, no pude hacer mucho para afinarlo además de cambiar el puente, lo que afectaría a las 6 cuerdas en lugar de solo a una, así que perdónenme si no suena perfecto, pero aún lo tengo lo suficientemente cerca como para podría usarlo para agregar algo de sabor y tocar una versión (muy amortiguada) del famoso riff de la hermosa canción de Eric Clapton: “Wonderful Tonight”.
