Our body needs energy to function, but not all energy sources are equal. Fortunately, there is “metabolic flexibility”, which allows us to maintain performance levels that last longer by consuming the different substrates appropriately to ensure that fatigue does not get too close.
And the body can process three types of fuel: protein, carbohydrates and fat. Simplifying this complex process, after eating, the body must decide whether to use or store the ingested macronutrients: the protein is used mainly for structural purposes (muscle), while the carbohydrate is converted into glucose, a fuel that is easily stored as glycogen. Fat can be used for energy or stored directly.
2.- The body recovers before the activity
Secondly, we must talk about the recovery phase when exercising on an empty stomach. There is a better aerobic metabolism of the muscles thanks to the fact that there are fewer levels of lactic acid and its elimination is also easier. With this, it should also be noted that the level of muscle glycogen reserves recovers sooner.
3.- Improves aerobic muscle performance
As we have said, one of the benefits of doing sports on an empty stomach is that it increases aerobic muscle performance. With this, our tissues can oxygenate better and obtain greater performance.
4.- They metabolize fats better
Another benefit of exercising on an empty stomach is that fats are better metabolized. The reason is that our body activates a series of hormonal mechanisms with which it uses its fat reserves to produce energy. To a large extent, we can say that this process is the result of the hormones that the body puts into our bloodstream. Specifically, it would be cortisol. This is a hormone that is generally associated with stress, and that can appear in different situations.
Among them are, for example, those of intense training. However, there are also periods of fasting. It is precisely this hormone that begins the fat mobilization process. This process includes the fats that are stored, which, thanks to this hormone, are made available to the muscles in order to degrade the amino acids and make our muscles have energy.
5.- Does not cause discomfort in the digestive system
Another beneficial point when doing sports on an empty stomach that we cannot ignore has to do with the digestive process itself. In fact, there are many people who feel discomfort or nausea when practicing sports as a result of having food in their digestive system. Although they can be avoided by eating moderate meals along with isotonic drinks, the ideal would be precisely not to eat anything beforehand.
The reason is that when we eat food we are dedicating blood to our muscles and, at the same time, to our stomach. With this we prevent any of them from carrying out their functions correctly, because digestion is not carried out at a recommended speed.
