Los Martirios de Colón – Aquiles Nazoa y Federico Ruiz 🎻 [ESP-ENG]

A propósito del 12 de octubre quiero compartir con ustedes este fragmento de una de las obras cumbres de la literatura operística venezolana. Se trata de Los Martirios de Colón, una ópera cómica escrita por el maestro Federico Ruiz y basada en textos del gran Aquiles Nazoa.

On October 12th I would like to share with you this fragment of one of the greatest works of Venezuelan operatic literature. It is called Los Martirios de Colón, a comic opera written by the master Federico Ruiz and based on texts by the great Aquiles Nazoa.

El libreto de esta ópera en dos actos fue extraído de dos obras maestras del genio Nazoa como lo son “Importancia y proyección de la ñema de Colón” y “Los Martirios de Colón, fragmentos de un diario escrito por el famoso erudito Mamerto Ñáñez Pinzón”.

The libretto of this opera in two acts was extracted from two masterpieces of the genius Nazoa as they are "Importance and projection of the ñema of Columbus" and "The Martyrdoms of Columbus, fragments of a diary written by the famous scholar Mamerto Ñáñez Pinzón".

Básicamente cada una de estas obras fue inspiración para cada uno de los dos actos de la ópera que, de una manera muy jocosa, al mejor estilo de Aquiles Nazoa, narra desde el momento en que el navegante fue a pedir ayuda a los Reyes Católicos para su travesía, hasta el viaje en sí y su posterior llegada a tierras americanas.

Basically each of these works was the inspiration for each of the two acts of the opera, which, in a very jocular way, in the best style of Aquiles Nazoa, narrates from the moment the navigator went to ask for help from the Catholic Kings for his journey, to the journey itself and his subsequent arrival in American lands.

La escena que disfrutamos hoy, es el climax del segundo acto, en el que los marineros, ya cansados de un largo viaje, sin esperanzas de llegar a tierra firme y con las provisiones ya al mínimo, amenazan a su capitán con echarlo al mar, si no tocan tierra en poco tiempo. Colón, muy asustado, les pide clemencia y los marineros, totalmente fuera de sus cabales están dispuestos a acabar con la vida del almirante.

The scene we enjoy today is the climax of the second act, in which the sailors, already tired of a long journey without hope of touching land and with the provisions already at the minimum, threaten their captain with throwing him to the sea, if they do not touch land in a short time. <Columbus, very frightened, asks them for mercy and the sailors, totally out of their minds, are ready to end the life of the admiral.

Esta función fue grabada el día 11 de noviembre del año 2014 en el salón Luis vas de Camoes de la Casa Portuguesa de Aragua con la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil “Federico Villena” y el Coro Estable de Ópera de Aragua. El rol protagónico estuvo interpretado por el maestro Roberto Leal, la dirección de escena fue de Alejandro Bastidas y la producción del maestro Manuel Marín. Este servidor tuvo la dicha de ser el director musical de este evento. Espero lo disfruten.

This performance was recorded on November 11, 2014 in the hall Luis vas de Camoes of the Casa Portuguesa de Aragua with the Youth Symphony Orchestra "Federico Villena" and the Stable Choir of Opera of Aragua. The leading role was played by the maestro Roberto Leal, the stage direction was by Alejandro Bastidas and the production by the maestro Manuel Marín.
