    The Intermittences of Death

This novel written by the 1998 Nobel Literature Prize winner, José Saramago, was published in 2005. In it he approaches the subject of death from the position of the church, the companies and the state; he deals with the business that the dead produce, the military patriotism; ironically and with a subtle humor he unmasks modern society, revealing its hypocrisies, its false conventionalisms and for this he makes use of magical realism.

A novel in which the main character, death, evolves until it becomes humanized, until it becomes a woman; and this happens thanks to two socially powerful elements: love and art.

From this proposition, contrary to current events, that is, that death decides not to kill because it falls in love, Saramago finds the excuse to reflect on life and its implications; it is a work whose theme, death, serves to meditate on our time, that of each one of us, and on the opportunity we have to continue breathing.

To captivate us, Saramago condenses a style devoid of dialogue in his narrative, but masterfully mixes humor, irony, fable, epistle, and with them he weaves a plot rich in literary resources that give this work its universal character.
