Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 71 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

Last week I started a new theme for my Hive Music Festival entries. Sometimes as musicians we tend to take ourselves a little bit too seriously. I definitely remember doing this when I first started playing Open Mic nights and pubs when I was a younger man. Sometimes it’s important to remember that it’s okay to just have fun with our music!

One of the ways that I like to do this is to take a cheesy pop song and try and cover it on solo acoustic guitar. Will the song still be catchy and recognisable in its bare-bones form due to its chord structure, melody and hooks? Sometimes! Other times, the attempt seems to fall flat, and I then realise that what made the song stand out were probably special sounds/effects or something else to do with the production that I cannot emulate… it’s an interesting game to play!

Last week I did Britney Spear’s first hit single “Baby One More Time”, released in late 1998, when Britney was just 16 years old. Just after that, in 1999, another teenage product of the “Mickey Mouse Club” burst onto the scene with her debut album! I’m talking about Christina Aguilera. The big hit that we all remember to this day from that album is “Genie in a Bottle”. Here is the original:

I think this one is nearly as fun to play and sing at a “braai” (the South African/Afrikaans word for barbeque) for my friends as last week’s song, and is nearly as recognisable after all these years! I think this is a fantastic example of a “good” cheesy pop song, if you get such a thing! I love how the verse, pre-chorus and chorus parts are all very different in melody and feeling, but all fit within the same structure… to me that shows how much you can do with quite a simple structure!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 71/Ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival!

La semana pasada comencé un nuevo tema para mis entradas al Hive Music Festival. A veces, como músicos, tendemos a tomarnos demasiado en serio. Definitivamente recuerdo haber hecho esto cuando comencé a tocar en pubs y noches de Open Mic cuando era más joven. ¡A veces es importante recordar que está bien simplemente divertirse con nuestra música!

Una de las formas en que me gusta hacer esto es tomar una canción pop cursi e intentar versionarla con un solo de guitarra acústica. ¿Seguirá siendo la canción pegadiza y reconocible en su forma básica debido a su estructura de acordes, melodía y ganchos? ¡A veces! Otras veces, el intento parece fracasar, y entonces me doy cuenta de que lo que hizo que la canción se destacara probablemente fueron sonidos/efectos especiales o algo más relacionado con la producción que no puedo emular... ¡es un juego interesante!

La semana pasada hice el primer sencillo exitoso de Britney Spear, “Baby One More Time”, lanzado a finales de 1998, cuando Britney tenía sólo 16 años. Creo que esta es casi tan divertida de tocar y cantar en un “braai” (la palabra sudafricana/afrikáans para barbacoa) para mis amigos como la canción de la semana pasada, ¡y es casi tan reconocible después de todos estos años! ¡Creo que este es un ejemplo fantástico de una “buena” canción pop cursi, si es que tienes algo así! Me encanta cómo la estrofa, el pre-estribillo y las partes del estribillo son muy diferentes en melodía y sentimiento, pero todos encajan dentro de la misma estructura... ¡para mí eso demuestra cuánto se puede hacer con una estructura bastante simple!
