HIVE OPEN MIC #167 (ENG/ESP): Theme: Otaku - "This Will Be the Day" (RWBY Volume 1) - Jeff Williams!

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Welcome to Week 167 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for the week is the rather challenging “Otaku"! Otaku is a Japanese phrase used to describe people that are obsessed with their hobby, and apparently it is most often used to describe people who are massive fans of anime or manga in particular.

I don’t watch a lot of anime, but there is one animated show by a company called Rooster Teeth, called RWBY, that I do love to watch. The animation and fight choreography are heavily inspired by anime. It is about a bunch of schoolgirls using magic and cool weapons to defeat monsters. Some of the characters have animal features like cat ears or rabbit ears… So, I think the only reason it can’t be called anime itself is that it wasn’t made in Japan and the dialogue is in English… kind of like champagne is made in France, and all other MCC bubblies made in the rest of the world is simply “sparkling wine”?

How did I learn about this show if I don’t normally watch these kinds of things? Well, the music actually! I used to follow a series of webcomics by a fan of rock music called “3 chord dorks”. Unfortunately, I don’t think he makes them anymore, and the website name has been taken over.

• I found out about the comics because he made some comics about one of South Africa’s best electric guitarists, who was honoured and shared it on his social media.
• I then found out about RWBY when reading the comics. The comic writer was loving the music on the show.
• A lot of the music is original heavy metal by a man called Jeff Williams. I am talking distorted guitar riffs and double pedal drumming. However, because the show is about school girls, the vocals are done by Jeff’s daughter Casey Lee Williams, who was a mere 15 for the first volume’s songs. She does an incredible job!

So, without further ado, I thought it would be funny to do the complete opposite of heavy metal. I won’t even use guitar, but a nylon stringed ukelele, as I sing the structure of the introduction to the first season of RWBY. Here is what it’s actually supposed to sound like (the animation improved in further seasons as the budget and time allocated to the project improved with its popularity!):

¡Hola a todos en Hive y especialmente a la comunidad Hive Open Mic! ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica!

Bienvenidos a la semana 167 del Hive Open Mic Challenge. ¡El tema de la semana es el bastante desafiante "Otaku"! Otaku es una frase japonesa que se usa para describir a las personas que están obsesionadas con su pasatiempo y, aparentemente, se usa con mayor frecuencia para describir a las personas que son grandes fanáticos del anime o manga en particular.

No veo mucho anime, pero hay un programa animado de una compañía llamada Rooster Teeth, llamada RWBY, que me encanta ver. La animación y la coreografía de lucha están fuertemente inspiradas en el anime. Se trata de un grupo de colegialas que usan armas mágicas y geniales para derrotar a los monstruos.

Algunos de los personajes tienen características de animales como orejas de gato u orejas de conejo... Entonces, creo que la única razón por la que no se puede llamar anime en sí mismo es que no se hizo en Japón y el diálogo está en inglés... algo así como el champán. hecho en Francia, y todos los demás burbujeantes de MCC hechos en el resto del mundo es simplemente "vino espumoso"?
