Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!
This is my 29th week contributing to "Three Tune Tuesday", an initiative started by @ablaze. It is week 94 overall!
Up until now, I have managed to stick to a set pattern, where I performed 2 cover songs (written by famous artists) and 1 original song (written by me) all around a theme. I managed to do this for 28 weeks in a row, with a little help from my friend @clairemobey!
As I mentioned last week, I have run out of finished original songs. My mind has gone blank!
If I'm honest, it is time to shift my focus on finishing the songs I/we have, making them sound good, practicing for gigs I have coming up with @clairemobey (we call our duo "MobeyDick"), and ultimately working towards recording some of them as nicely as possible!
Because of this, I am going to change my pattern for "Three Tune Tuesday" - it is going to be all covers for a while. Why not change the pattern to the following: I pick one of my favourite artists, that has inspired me, and try to do three covers all by the same artist?
So with this new pattern, I would like to start with Bob Dylan! My parents were teenagers in the 1960's when Bob Dylan started out, and it meant that I grew up with a lot of Bob Dylan in the CD collection!
For the first cover song, let's start with a really famous one! "Blowing in the Wind". Bob Dylan released this a year after signing with Columbia Records, and if I remember correctly, it was covered almost immediately by several other artists! It would be remiss of me not to play harmonica on Bob Dylan week, so let me pull one out for this one!! Here is the original version (now remember this was quite a bit before music videos were really a thing!):
For the second cover song, lets try something that I think is criminally unknown to most people. When people think of Bob Dylan, they think of the first song, or "Like a Rolling Stone", or "Don't Think Twice it's Alright" or "To Make You Feel My Love" or... well I can go on and on... the man wrote hundreds of songs!
Perhaps being so prolific was a curse. If anybody else had written "Blind Willie McTell" it would be very widely known. Look at all the comments on the video of the people who were lucky enough to find it on "The Bootleg Series" saying it's their favourite Bob Dylan song, or that it's the best he ever sung!
My father always asks me to sing it for him... there is something about the lyrics that take me back to the past, like a Western movie, as I close my eyes, and something about the song structure that really wants me to sing much harder than I usually do... so my parents love to hear me attempt it! Here's the original version:
Finally, here's a famous song - but a lot of people think it's a Jimi Hendrix song. Jimi Hendrix did famously cover it, and it is one of the songs that proved Jimi Hendrix was one of the best electric guitar players of all time, but Bob Dylan's more acoustic original actually shows off the main riff and it's distinctive timing very well as well.
Here's Bob Dylan's version of... "All Along the Watchtower"!
And here's the one by Jimi Hendrix for comparison's sake:
So that's week 94 done and dusted! I hope you enjoyed the new format of picking a single prolific artist/band and doing 3 cover versions! Thank you so much for listening!
Which artist will I do three covers of next week?
Before I go... please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursdays! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP! It's as simple as that!
