Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from the Garden Route in South Africa (not Cape Town for a change – I am enjoying a little New Year’s Holiday)! I hope everybody out there had a great Christmas (if you celebrate) and a fantastic New Year as well!

I see I forgot to wear my cover hat!! This is a mistake!! Today’s song was definitely NOT written by me! Haha! (I normally have a habit of singing covers with a hat, and my own original songs without a hat).

This is Week 143 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is “Voice of Hope”. I couldn’t help but kick myself, because for Week 139 I sang a song that @clairemobey wrote (and I often perform with her in our duo “MobeyDick”) called “Song of Hope” which would have been even more perfect now than then, but I can’t do it twice!

Luckily, I didn’t have to think long for a second idea. I am a proud South African, I have sung the South African National Anthem, as well as several songs by Juluka for Hive Open Mic so far. For this week, how about the song “Gimme Hope Jo’anna” by Eddy Grant. This is a reggae-pop song that was released by Eddy Grant in 1988 as a protest against South Africa’s political system of Apartheid (forced racial segregation to the benefit of the white minority and the detriment of the black majority).

Jo’anna makes reference to Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa and the economic hub. The song was banned in South Africa by the Apartheid Government at the time… but is still widely played on South African radio to this day and is a much beloved song and symbol of our history. (You’ll be happy to know that Apartheid came to an end quite shortly after from about 1990-1994.)

Veo que me olvidé de ponerme el sombrero de portada. ¡¡Esto es un error!! ¡La canción de hoy definitivamente NO fue escrita por mí! ¡Jaja! (Normalmente tengo la costumbre de cantar versiones con sombrero, y mis propias canciones originales sin sombrero).

Esta es la semana 143 del Hive Open Mic Challenge, y el tema de la semana es "La voz de la esperanza".
