Celebración post presentación

Hola, amigos de Hive. Desde hace algunos meses he estado algo distanciada de esta plataforma, ¿la respuesta? La agonía de muchos estudiantes que como a mí les ha tocado afrontar al final de su carrera universitaria la tesis. Sin embargo, quería escribir una última publicación antes de que acabará el año, para compartir algunos de mis pensamientos y experiencias como tesista.

Hello, friends of Hive. I have been a little disconnected from this platform for a few months, the answer? The agony of many students who have had to face the thesis at the end of their university career. However, I wanted to write one last post before the end of the year, to share some of my thoughts and experiences as a thesis student.

Como cualquier otro estudiante de Idiomas Modernos tuve la eterna y nada placentera experiencia de realizar un "Trabajo especial de grado", una tarea que me llevó un poco más de dos años. Aunque parezca bastante tiempo para escribir una disertación, la mayor parte de este tiempo fue consumido por la inevitable procrastinación y el constante temor de no saber por dónde iniciar ni cómo dar el siguiente paso.

Like any other Modern Languages student, I had the eternal and unpleasant experience of doing a "Special Degree Project", a task that took me a little more than two years. Although it may seem like a long time to write a dissertation, most of this time was consumed by the inevitable procrastination and the constant fear of not knowing where to start and how to take the next step.

Primer horrocrux: escoger un texto

Quizás muchos antes de terminar su carrera ya saben qué quieren en su tesis, pero ese no fue mi caso. Al terminar créditos no tenía ni la más remota idea de qué hacer, así que opté por la opción más sencilla y solicité la opción de "Trabajo especial de grado", una falsa pasantía que te da la ilusión de que todo será más fácil, pero qué puede darte los dolores de cabeza más grandes si te asignan un texto de una temática particular. Eso sí, te da la tranquilidad de tener por dónde empezar, aunque no sepas qué hacer con eso.

First horcrux: choosing a text

Perhaps many people already know what they want in their thesis before finishing their degree, but that was not my case. When I finished credits I had no idea what to do, so I opted for the easiest option and applied for the "Special Degree Work" option, a fake internship that gives you the illusion that everything will be easier, but which can give you the biggest headaches if you are assigned a text on a particular topic. It does give you the peace of mind of having a place to start, even if you don't know what to do with it.

Segundo horrocrux: Traducir una temática que no se entiende en su idioma orígen.

Para mí mala suerte, el texto que me asignaron fue un libro de informática y programación que ya era bastante difícil entender en inglés.

Second horcrux: Translating a subject that is not understood in its original language.

Unfortunately, the text I was assigned was a computer and programming book that was hard enough to understand in English.

Tercer horrocrux: encontrar la terminología correcta.

Mi primer pensamiento fue creer que al ser un texto científico - técnico, la terminología sería mucho más exacta y estándar en español, pero ese fue mi mayor problema, que a los informáticos les gusta usar muchos términos en inglés (aún teniendo un equivalente en español; para mí sorpresa, esto dependía del grupo cultural al que pertenecen, pues no todos usan la misma terminología, ni siquiera en un país.
Ahí descubrí que no podía guiarme por nada que viera en internet, sin importar si lo escribió el informático más reconocido de Venezuela, debía siempre guiarme por lo que se dicta en la Escuela de Computación de la Universidad Central de Venezuela, pues ahí iba dirigido el texto.

Third horcrux: finding the correct terminology.

My first thought was to believe that being a scientific-technical text, the terminology would be much more accurate and standard in Spanish, but that was my biggest problem, that computer scientists like to use many terms in English (even having an equivalent in Spanish; to my surprise, this depended on the cultural group they belong to, as not everyone uses the same terminology, not even in one country.
There I discovered that I could not be guided by anything I saw on the internet, no matter if it was written by the most renowned computer scientist in Venezuela, I should always be guided by what is taught at the Escuela de Computación of the Universidad Central de Venezuela, because that is where the text was addressed.

Cuarto horrocrux: escoger una teoría.

Luego de traducir vuelves a quedar en el limbo, sin saber qué pasó dar, por fortuna, mi tutora tuvo la brillante idea de iluminar mi camino y presentarme una teoría que me serviría "La teoría de los polisistemas" y ahí pude continuar la tormentosa tarea de enfrentarme al marco teórico y de analizar los problemas que tuve durante la traducción.

Quinto horrocrux: la presentación.

Comenzar una tesis ya es tarea difícil, terminarla es un logro, pero presentarla es otro nivel de tortura. Es una de las partes más difíciles, pues tuve menos de un mes desde el momento en que me avisaron que ya podía presentar hasta el día de la presentación. Más allá de eso, me parece una completa agonía tener que hablar durante 45 minutos sobre teorías que ya no usarás y sobre nombre y años de los autores que no volverás a recordar.

Fifth horcrux: the presentation.

Starting a thesis is already a difficult task, finishing it is an achievement, but presenting it is another level of torture. It is one of the most difficult parts, as I had less than a month from the moment I was notified that I could submit until the day of the presentation. Beyond that, I find it complete agony to have to talk for 45 minutes about theories you will no longer use and names and years of authors you will never remember again.

Aquellos que no han tenido que padecer de este horrocrux que se queda con una parte de tu alma y energía deberían considerarse afortunados, pues no es un chiste, hasta el estudiante más dedicado y entusiasta se ve afectado de alguna u otra forma por los efectos de estás disertaciones, que, a mi parecer, no tienen mucho sentido. Si bien no las considero inútiles, dudo que aquellos estudiantes que se ven obligados a escribir un mar de palabras vacías sobre temas que poco les interesan logren plantear las nuevas teorías de la próxima generación, aunque no es imposible, probablemente esas pocas excepciones lleguen a darse por casualidad y no por interés propio.

Those who have not had to suffer from this horcrux that takes a part of your soul and energy should consider themselves lucky, because it is not a joke, even the most dedicated and enthusiastic student is affected in some way or another by the effects of these dissertations, which, in my opinion, do not make much sense. Although I do not consider them useless, I doubt that those students who are forced to write a sea of empty words on topics that do not interest them much will be able to come up with the new theories of the next generation, although it is not impossible, probably those few exceptions come about by chance and not out of self-interest.
