Dear #hivepets friends, some time ago I introduced you to Chismoso, a land tortoise that here in Venezuela they call morrocoy. I had two females and one male, but three years ago, in a very strong heat wave, the female died while laying eggs. I only kept Chismoso, the male, and one of the daughters of my morrocoya. Usually, the female always laid 10 or 13 eggs, but that time she only laid three and died. It was very sad for us. The morrocoya that I kept, which is a female, we affectionately called her Morri, because I had another one with that name before. She was given to me as a gift when she was small, just like this one, and when she was 5 years old she escaped under the gate of the house and we never heard of her again.

Queridos amigos de #hivepets, hace algún tiempo les presenté a Chismoso, una tortuga de tierra que aquí en Venezuela llaman morrocoy. Tenía dos hembras y un macho, pero hace tres años, en una oleada de calor muy fuerte, la hembra murió mientras ponía huevos. Solo me quedé con Chismoso, el macho, y con una de las hijas de mi morrocoya. Por lo general, la hembra siempre ponía 10 o 13 huevos, pero esa vez solo puso tres y murió. Fue algo muy triste para nosotros. A la morrocoya que me quedé, que es hembra, le pusimos cariñosamente Morri, porque antes tuve otra con ese nombre. Me la regalaron cuando era pequeña, igual que esta, y a los 5 años se escapó por debajo del portón de casa y nunca más supimos de ella.

Chismoso has that name because he is curious. He likes to be close to people and is always full of curiosity.

Chismoso tiene ese nombre por ser curioso. Le gusta estar cerca de las personas y siempre está lleno de curiosidad.

When Morri and Chismoso walk together, we have to be careful and always be watching them, because Morri always goes to where Chismoso is and he does not see them, and he can run over them with his huge paws.

Cuando Morri y Chismoso andan juntos, tenemos que tener cuidado y estar siempre observándolos, porque Morri siempre va hacia donde está Chismoso y él no las ve, y puede pasar por encima de ellas con sus enormes patas.

Yesterday it rained quite a bit, after months of intense drought. Even though my tortoises are terrestrial, they enjoyed the rainy weather. They walked all over the yard and ate fresh grass. During these dry months, they were just another foodie at home, as we had to buy cabbage and lettuce for them. Chismoso really likes mango and pumpfruit.

Ayer llovió bastante, después de meses de intensa sequía. A pesar de que mis tortugas son terrestres, disfrutaron del clima lluvioso. Caminaron por todo el patio y comieron hierba fresca. Durante estos meses de sequía, ellas eran otro comensal más en casa, ya que teníamos que comprarles repollo y lechuga. A Chismoso le gusta mucho el mango y la frutabomba.

The turtles also spent some time at the watering hole. Morri even swam. I think he was just exploring the unknown a bit. Chismoso just drank water.

Las tortugas también estuvieron un rato en el abrevadero. Morri incluso nadó. Creo que solo estaba explorando lo desconocido un poco. Chismoso solo bebió agua.

When Morri and Chismoso go for a walk in the yard, I have to take the dogs, Frida and Coki, to the garden, because they start playing with the turtles and turn them over. That makes the turtles angry, because if they are turned over, they can be easy prey for any other animal. In that position, they feel vulnerable. I also have to keep a close eye on Chismoso, because he climbs the stairs to eat the plants he likes the most. On one occasion, he ate almost all the flowering sweet bell pepper plants and we couldn't do anything about it.

Cuando Morri y Chismoso salen a pasear por el patio, tengo que llevar a los perros, Frida y Coki, al jardín, porque se ponen a jugar con las tortugas y las voltean. Eso enfada a las tortugas, porque si quedan volteadas, pueden ser presa fácil de cualquier otro animal. En esa posición, ellas se sienten vulnerables. También tengo que estar muy pendiente de Chismoso, porque sube las escaleras para comer las plantas que más le gustan. En una ocasión, se comió casi todas las plantas de ají dulce ya florecidas y no pudimos hacer nada al respecto.
