I typically encounter many people during yoga classes who don't know how to or can't perform forward bending, with legs extended. It doesn't matter if it is lying on the floor or standing, folding forward. It becomes very difficult for them to generate a correct pelvic rotation (pelvic anteversion), which allows the abdomen to approach the thighs correctly.
We spend so much time sitting on chairs that the muscles in our posterior area (back of the body) have become very short, especially in the lumbar area and hamstrings.
We begin to carry loads to the lower vertebrae, by the position or stiffness of our hip, and modification of our curvature in the spine, we end up suffering from hernias, impingement, pain in the hips, legs. Even, these tensions can be so strong that emotionally we can tend to close ourselves and it affects our relationships.
All this can be treated with a constant, patient, gentle and disciplined practice of Yoga. Or simply a constant stretching of our body.
That is why learning to do a good pincer pose, or as it is called in Yoga; Paschimottanasa, is highly recommended to correctly elongate the posterior mesh of the body, stimulate the abdominal and renal organs and make the hips more flexible and even allow us to have more emotional openness.
Krishnamacharya, a well known Yoga master of the twentieth century used to give great importance to the Paschimottanasana posture, in fact, its importance is such, that in the same practice used to give multiple variations of it, to deepen more and more the physical work that was done with it.
The posture is performed by bending the hips forward, making an anteversion of the pelvis, and bringing the abdomen, chest and head as close as possible to the legs, with the intention of minimizing the space between them, while we can hold the feet with our hands, and breathe up to 25 breaths in it, to obtain great benefits in the posture.
I hope you enjoy the video and can enjoy and practice the posture correctly, it is ideal to perform after physical activities of high energy expenditure such as running, playing sports or even after a long day.
