HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 52 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 52 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

Today I would like to sing the song “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen.

One very cool thing about this song is that in the opening verse it has the lines “it goes like this, the fourth, the fifth, the minor fall and the major lift…” The truth is that is exactly how the accompanying music goes! At exactly the same time as you sing it, you go from 4th major to 5th major, a “fall” down to 6th major, and then “lift” back up to 4th major to 5th major again… It is basically like the lyrics tell you how to play about half the song! Hahaha – very useful for the more forgetful musicians amongst us!

Another cool thing about this song is that it has been covered many times! Notable covers include famous artists like Jeff Buckley and Rufus Wainwright. Why is this cool? Well, it means your audience is likely to know the song, and possibly even sing along (which is always a wonderful energy to be blessed with), but they probably also don’t have a set expectation for exactly how it is going to be sung… they may already be familiar with more than one version!

Often when I am attempting covers, I find myself trying to copy the original artist a bit too much. I may add a bit of my own rhythm and guitar playing style (usually trying to simplify the song, and pronounce the rhythm, to make up for the fact that it’s usually only me and my guitar), but when it comes to the singing, I may land up copying the singer’s accent, where they put emotional emphasis, and even their stylistic quirks. It can be very tricky to sing the song in my own voice.

With “Hallelujah”, I’m definitely not trying to sing it exactly like Leonard Cohen. It is also a song with a great canvas and range for testing your voice, how you project emotion, and how you push yourself. Basically, I’m saying that I think it is a great song for people to tackle and allow themselves to be themselves, find their own voice and singing style, and their own ways of emphasizing the emotion of the song. They can then carry that lesson over into how they may sing their own songs if they are starting to write some original material!

Hoy me gustaría cantar la canción “Hallelujah” de Leonard Cohen.

Una cosa muy interesante de esta canción es que en el verso inicial tiene las líneas “va así, la cuarta, la quinta, la caída menor y el levantamiento mayor…” ¡La verdad es que así es exactamente como va la música que la acompaña!
