Today while taking a walk on the beach I saw water that was stagnant on a stone and from its appearance it had been there for a long time! It is not normal to see green Atlantic ocean water, it is generally very translucent and allows us to observe our feet, but apparently when the salt water is in a place with constant incidence of solar rays some living organisms grow that make the water change color! In my post we are going to answer some questions including why is water green? What organisms are present? your name, classification !!👨‍🎓🔬

    METHODOLOGY👨‍🏫🔬/METODOLOGIA🧫🧠

Like all small scientific work, we must capture a methodology in our report, this means the set of techniques that were carried out to carry out the study! In my case, I went for a walk along the shore of the Atlantic Ocean looking for small stones where the water is stagnant that it can hardly circulate, these environments are conducive to organisms that prefer waters with little movement and with constant sun! well take some samples and take them to my lab!💥🌅

After taking the water to my laboratory I will let it rest since all the organisms are suspended and this movement ends up breaking the organelles of many bacteria or algae, so I will let the water rest for about 30 minutes and then I will take 2 drops with the dropper, but instead of taking it in the superficial part I will take the one that is at the bottom of the tube where the water is greener! After taking a few drops of water, the cover object is placed on it and we are ready to take it to the microscope!🧠🔬

Do you remember your high school Biology class when the teacher made us use the lowest magnification objective to see a sample? This is a universal law of microbiology, so I will start to see my sample with a magnification of 14x I am almost sure that I will not see many living organisms in this stagnant water because there is a lot of sun and the sun is a natural sterilizer! many organisms come down for cover when UV rays are intense, but in stagnant water with a depth of 5cm the UV incidence is too great and few organisms survive this condition!😮👨‍🎓

With a 14x magnification I only see small green organisms moving in the water but I can't see anything else, and my instinct was correct in these extreme conditions only very small microscopic life manages to adapt, I did not see water bears, I did not see rotifers! just these tiny little guys! by making a few magnifications and bringing my field of vision to 50x I can already see my study subjects clearly! they are microalgae.😱💚💚

    img_20211130_123431.jpg

This was one of the questions that I had to answer in my post, because this stagnant water had a green color and if we look at the shore of the beach, we do not see this color in the water. Well because we get microalgae, these living organisms have a very interesting characteristic they are green since they have an organelle called "plastos" and it is similar to the chloroplasts of plants that are almost "green", now let's imagine millions of these algae gathered in a small portion of water will easily turn green! and we answered the question with all logic and scientific foundation! but what are these algae?

It was easy to identify them because they are very common in seawater, they are microolgas that belong to the Phacus genus that in turn are grouped taxonomically in the phylum Euglenozoa, they are bone unicellular organisms composed of only one cell, which have a flattened and pointed morphology, These fantastic microorganisms are photosynthetic. They acquire their food through a set of physiological processes where the sun is their main source of energy!🌕💥

The phacus cell is covered by plasts that are specialized to perform photosynthesis, we can also find a red structure (eye spot) that is a photoreceptor through which the microalgae manages to find areas where the sun is more intense, we can see the flajelo which is used for movement, the (paramylon body) are sacks full of carbohydrates that have the function of energy reserve!💚🔬

The first time phacus were described was in the 19th century and it was named for its resemblance to the lentil bean! I am quite excited because this species that I found is not common in salt water, so I can deduce that salt water has a mixture of rain water, the temperature was below 15 degrees, which is unusual, besides they They do not prefer stagnant water because they do not have the organic components conducive to their growth. All my findings are not entirely true with what the bibliographic reference says, the phacus are great indicators of environmental contamination and hence their ecological importance in addition to being part of the phytoplankton!😮👨‍🎓
