What I love about Biology is that not a single day goes by without me coming across something new, it is definitely not a monotonous profession, today while I was walking I collected several flowers and made a video explaining each part and what they are for, but not only We will explain each organ if not we will also open some and see their ovules and their male gamete or pollen! To close this colorful post we are going to analyze a very strange flower that inspired Darwin to postulate his theory of adaptation and theory of natural selection! so make yourself comfortable and enjoy my video and content!🌷🌼👨‍💻

When Darwin made his travels looking for physical evidence that would demonstrate his great theory of natural selection, he came across flowers that had very strange appearances, and that had a design very different from any garden flower, he had an intuition that animals adapted to their needs. natural environments and not the environment of the animals, so a species of insect that reached a space where the flowers had a long (ovular duct) said insects had to adapt and lengthen their proboscis to reach the nectar and feed, and the at the same time, the flower was able to attract pollen grains.👨‍🏫👨‍🎓

AN ADAPTIVE FLOWER STRATEGY👨‍🏫/UNA ESTRATEGIA DE ADAPTACION DE LA FLOR🌼🧠

In reality, flowers have a great capacity for adaptation to be pollinated by many arthropods, then there are other flowers that are more specific to be pollinated by more specific organisms since they evolved in their anatomy to achieve the nectar of the flower, for For example, we see that when a hummingbird with a very long tongue reaches the bottom of a flower that has a very long ovular extension. The color of the flowers are the attraction of all insects, this is how they attract them to be fertilized!🤓😲

Then I bumped into my walk while you collected the flowers with this big beautiful flower, with many colors! I thought wuow! This flower has a very advanced mechanism of attraction because from a few meters they can be visualized, but there is something interesting in this flower! where are your organs? because I only see petals? where are the stamens? the ovule? So I see in detail and there is a hole with some bristles, which I assumed that the insects entered this way, they passed through a conduit until they reached the reproductive organs! And I thought wuow that was how Darwin saw the adaptation since this hole does not fit any insects, only some small ones!🤔😮

WHY THIS DESIGN?👨‍🏫/POR QUE ESTE DISEÑO?🌼🧠

    img_8849.jpg

    img_8850.jpg

I thought later but why does the flower have this strange design? Why invite animals to enter your internal organs? Of course, after reviewing the scientific botanical bibliographies, I saw that with the "hairs" that are in the tube, they manage to capture all the pollen grains, being more efficient than a bee that arrives and leaves in 1 second ... Here the animal has to "earn your food" by going through the chute! it is a very good strategy because pollen is always collected!😶😶

If we read a little the common ancestor of flowers, the researchers affirm that it was small and had male and female organs, from here all the flowers that exist today on earth evolved, due to their size and appearance, although this design seems very old it's actually newer than you might think! The question is, how were the primitive flowers fertilized? where did they grow up? these questions are still a mystery in the botanical world!🌼🌷

Well I needed to clarify my doubts and I could only do it by opening the structure of this large and beautiful flower, and immediately it all made sense, I could clearly see the male and female organ of the flower, only that unlike other flowers this is inside I could see clearly the pollen grains that were trapped in the hairs inside the structure, when the pollen enters the ovule, "fertilization" takes place and later the fruit grows from the flower!🤓🔬

    img_20211204_164333.jpg

We know that the flower is the sexual organ of the plants, within the flower there is a set of organs whose function is connected to achieve greater efficiency at the time of "fertilizing" the ovules, it seems that the flower has "ornaments" but it is not thus, everything is adaptation and each structure has a very important function! there are flowers that have aromas this is transformed into chemical stimuli that capture the attention of arthropods!🤔😮

After I make a vertical cut in the structure of the flower, here I have access to the pollen grains, we can see that insects have already passed through here and left the male gamete on many sides, probably a grain of pollen would reach the ovule and in a few months the fruit begins to grow! We can also see in the photo the efficiency of the bristles trapping pollen.😁😀

It is beautiful to see the details of a pollen grain, something that is very small, in fact pollen is more complex than we think the famous male gamete has a set of tissues inside that perform essential functions for the fertilization of the ovum, inside we can see : generative cell, exin, generative nucleus, opening, intina all this is inside a grain of pollen!🤩🤩

I invite you to search the internet for details and microscopic photos of the ovule of a flower and you will hardly get first it is difficult to obtain them and second there are few botanical studies on the female organ of the flower, but with a stroke of luck and a good cut I managed to photograph an egg with all its details!😁

    img_20211204_162627.jpg

Well the ovule is the female gamete of the flower, when it is fertilized by the male gamete or pollen then a set of biological processes occurs that will give rise to the fruit that is the "ripened flower" or fertilized of the plant, of the fruit there is a seed that will give rise to a plant and thus begins the plant cycle!🧫🧫

    img_20211204_162703.jpg

Like pollen, the ovule is very complex and also has a set of integuments or layers that perform a set of different functions, there is an outer layer that protects the ovule from external agents that can damage it, then inside substances that keep it alive since it consumes itself! and finally the area where the ovum is fertilized!🤔🧐
