It was just another ramdon night in Amsterdam, when we were on our way home and we heard the sound of the drums coming from afar. We - meaning I - didn't know the occasion but was definitely ecstatic, because it was a familiar sound from Suriname that I almost always dance to. Doesn't matter if I'm just a passerby or a guest at an event.
The sound came from what is known as a "marching band" in the US of A, but more informal and with dancers, majorettes and often with a "leader" directing the rhythm and the moves. This time it was a small band, with only one dancer who also took the lead, but the vibe and joy were definitely there. I couldn't but help myself and also started to dance. Only thing standing in the way of my movements was that I'm not used to dancing with a coat and scarf on: too many layers 😂.
