Era tanto el talento que Morphy fue reconocido como el mayor maestro de ajedrez del mundo. Fue un prodigio del ajedrez y no es que tuviera un maestro o instructor, nadie le enseñó formalmente al joven Morphy a jugar ajedrez; más bien, simplemente aprendió viendo jugar a otros.
