HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 69 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Hurt" - Nine Inch Nails vs Johnny Cash!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 69 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

Let’s continue the theme I thought of for weeks 64 to 68, where I tackle some songs that were originally released by one artist or band, but also have a very successful famous cover version released by another band or artist. I can then show you both versions and you let me know which one you prefer!

In my honest, personal (subjective!) opinion, I grew up with loads of Bob Dylan’s albums playing in the house, so you’d think this would be game, set and match for the original version, but I was actually very impressed with the vibe of the Guns & Roses cover – how they lengthened it, rocked it out, added the guitar solos and completely changed the vibe of the song. I’m actually going to call this one a TIE, which is a big compliment to Guns & Roses, seeing as I haven’t listened to their stuff much!

Today I would like to put forth the song “Hurt”. The original version was released on the album “The Downward Spiral” by Nine Inch Nails (NiN) in 1994. It was released as a single a few months later, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1996. Here is that original version:

In 2002, an elderly Johnny Cash teamed up with Rick Rubin of Shangri-La studios to record a beautiful, haunting, acoustic version of the song, that just seemed so rich with the emotion, the pain and the mortality that the lyrics portray. Many people think this might be the best cover of all time… even Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails admitted that “that song isn’t mine anymore”… Here it is:

So! Which one do you prefer? The original by Nine Inch Nails, or the cover by Johnny Cash? I’m going to give you my answer now, because I’m going to start doing a different theme for the Hive Music Festival nest week… I think this is one case where the COVER is obviously superior!

Blasphemy I know… but I also think it’s my favourite song by Johnny Cash compared to HIS early original work too… the sound of this recording is so simple, and yet so full and emotional and so compelling, that it is better than the Nine Inch Nails original, or any original by Johnny Cash too… wow, there I said it! Hahaha!
