HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 25 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Sea of Love", featuring Grandpa's Old Autoharp!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 25 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, three weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!

I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival for the next few weeks uses a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the third instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” was the Kazoo, which is easy to learn once you realise you must hum rather than blow!

The second “Instrument of the Week” was the Pennywhistle, which is actually played in a traditional South African music style called “Kwela”… The pennywhistle is not only used in Traditional Irish jigs (like The Dubliners or The Pogues) at all!

Now it time for the third “Instrument of the Week” – My grandfather’s old autoharp!

My grandfather passed away when I was 4 years old. I have been told that he was very musical and used to entertain people with folk songs all the time and had many instruments. Many years later, I was able to inherit this old autoharp (and an old wooden recorder I may have to dig up soon!).

So how does an autoharp work?

Similar to a harp, there are enough strings to tune all 12 notes for a couple of octaves! On my grandfather’s old autoharp, the strings are very old, and the tuning bolts are super stiff – I’ve tried oiling them a bit but no help – I think the next thing to try is to make a tuning key with a long handle for extra torque/leverage to give me the strength I need to change the tuning in small enough cranks! It would be great to find a new set of strings too – but this would probably have to be ordered on E-Bay or Amazon by the next person visiting us in South Africa from the USA or Europe?

And then there’s all these buttons you can press down, set not just to a single note, but to a full chord made up of 3 or even 4 notes – how do these buttons work? In the video I show that pressing the Gmaj button will push a soft material down to mute all of the strings except G, B and D that make up the Gmaj chord. So, the G, B and D strings will vibrate and ring out the Gmaj chord, while the other strings will just make the muted scratchy sound that is so characteristic of this instrument!

Now the autoharp is an old-fashioned folk instrument. If you scour Youtube you should be able to find footage of Johnny Cash’s wife, June Carter Cash, playing one very well! How about this one:

Phil Phillips actually released the song “Sea of Love” in 1959! I never knew anything about the original version. I am far more familiar with Cat Power’s haunting cover released in 2000, with very little accompaniment but simple-strumming on the autoharp!

My wife and I became aware of the song, as it was used in a particularly moving part of the film “Juno” in 2007. Here is a glimpse into how well the song matched the emotion and mood of the film. It comes at the moment where Juno has finally given birth and allowed the baby to be adopted… the song starts at about 26 seconds into this video of the scene:

My wife Julia and I loved that song so much, that we actually chose it as the song for her to walk down the aisle to on our wedding day… so I associate it with one of the happiest moments in my life!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 25 / Ronda 1 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, hace tres semanas comencé a usar el “Cover Hat of Shame”. Cuando comencé a tocar música en público, uno de los primeros lugares a los que fui se llamaba Barleycorn Music Club, que animaba mucho a que probáramos nuestras canciones originales en la audiencia. Muchos años después, pude heredar este viejo arpa automática (¡y una vieja flauta de madera que quizás tenga que desenterrar pronto!).
Entonces, ¿cómo funciona un autoarpa?

Similar a un arpa, ¡hay suficientes cuerdas para afinar las 12 notas durante un par de octavas! En el viejo arpa automática de mi abuelo, las cuerdas son muy viejas y los pernos de afinación son muy rígidos. Intenté engrasarlos un poco, pero no sirvió de nada. Creo que lo siguiente que debo intentar es hacer una llave de afinación con un mango largo para par/palanca adicional para darme la fuerza que necesito para cambiar la afinación en bielas lo suficientemente pequeñas. Sería genial encontrar un nuevo juego de cuerdas también, pero probablemente tendría que pedirlo en E-Bay o Amazon la próxima persona que nos visite en Sudáfrica desde EE. UU. o Europa.

Y luego están todos estos botones que puede presionar, establecer no solo en una sola nota, sino en un acorde completo compuesto por 3 o incluso 4 notas: ¿cómo funcionan estos botones? En el video, muestro que presionar el botón Gmaj empujará un material suave hacia abajo para silenciar todas las cuerdas excepto G, B y D que forman el acorde Gmaj. Entonces, las cuerdas G, B y D vibrarán y tocarán el acorde Gmaj, mientras que las otras cuerdas solo harán el sonido chirriante sordo que es tan característico de este instrumento.

¡Phil Phillips lanzó la canción "Sea of Love" en 1959! Nunca supe nada de la versión original. ¡Estoy mucho más familiarizado con la inquietante portada de Cat Power lanzada en 2000, con muy poco acompañamiento pero con un simple rasgueo en el arpa automática!

Mi esposa y yo nos enteramos de la canción, ya que se usó en una parte particularmente conmovedora de la película "Juno" en 2007. Aquí hay un vistazo de qué tan bien la canción coincidía con la emoción y el estado de ánimo de la película. Llega en el momento en que Juno finalmente dio a luz y permitió que el bebé fuera adoptado... la canción comienza aproximadamente a los 26 segundos de este video de la escena:
