HIVE OPEN MIC #204 (ENG/ESP): Asian Culture -"Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas!

Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from France! (I’m usually based in Cape Town, South Africa and will be back there in two weeks).

Welcome to Week 204 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is “Asian Culture”!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. Let’s tackle that last one! Asian culture is famous for its various martial arts. I currently do a few Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes myself, but that system was inspired by Japanese Jiu Jitsu and Judo. I also do a bit of kick-boxing, which is inspired by Japanese Karate and Kempo as well as Western boxing, and a bit of Muay Thai (from Thailand). Before any of these styles, I also took some classes in Wing Chun, Tai Chi and 7-star mantis, which are all styles of Kung-Fu.

Kung-Fu became famous in the West because of the movies made by Golden Harvest and the Shaw Brothers. Bruce Lee’s famous movies come from about 1971 to 1974.

Carl Douglas was probably inspired by some of these movies when he created this instantly recognizable hit in 1974!:

Carl Douglas returned to do the chorus and feature in the music video in a remake with rap verses by Bus Stop from 1998. This is probably the version I recognise best as I would have been about 12 or 13 years old!

Perhaps you only know the version that was used for the “Kung Fu Panda” movie? It was sung by Ceelo Green and the star of the movie Jack Black, who does sing brilliantly whenever he gets the chance it seems, hence the “School of Rock” and “Tenacious D” movies! I love the Kung Fu Panda movie, as it really seemed to pay homage to all sorts of classic Shaw Brothers Kung Fu movies… the Furious Five (Monkey is actually voiced by Jackie Chan) reminds me of “The Five Deadly Venoms”, while also paying tribute to actual styles of Kung Fu including Crane and Mantis styles…

So, let’s give it a shot!

¡Abordemos ese último! La cultura asiática es famosa por sus diversas artes marciales. Actualmente doy algunas clases de Jiu Jitsu brasileño, pero ese sistema se inspiró en el Jiu Jitsu y el Judo japoneses. También practico un poco de kick-boxing, que está inspirado en el Karate y el Kempo japoneses, así como en el boxeo occidental, y un poco de Muay Thai (de Tailandia).
