MUSIC - Cape Town, South Africa - The Barleycorn Music Club rises from the Ashes! (ENG/ESP)

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town, South Africa!

Besides the odd bit of surfing footage, music is my main topic when posting on HIVE, and I currently participate and make posts for the Three Tune Tuesday (I cover the songs as well as share the original videos), Hive Open Mic, the Retro Music Challenge, and the Hive Music Festival every week. It is a great way to keep consistent on HIVE while also practising my music!

I work for a Renewable Energy Development company, but I’m also a part-time singer/songwriter, and occasionally do gigs, mainly with original songs, either as a solo musician, but more recently as a duo called MobeyDick with my friend @clairemobey. Besides paid gigs at the Cottage Club and the Alma Café, one of the places where we have loved performing is at the Barleycorn Music Club!

The Barleycorn Music Club was started way back in 1975, and ever since then it has been a non-profit organisation run by volunteers in order to promote local, mostly original, music in my hometown of Cape Town, South Africa. I personally served on the committee that organised the gigs back when I was a Chemical Engineering MSc student back in about 2010-2012, and it was a great way to meet a lot of Cape Town’s best talent when I was just starting to write and perform myself.

For almost every Monday, since the beginning in 1975 the Barleycorn has hosted showcase evenings (my parents used to go often when they were young!). Usually, 3-4 acts will play on the night. What is very awesome about the Barleycorn is it is a supportive audience that expects to be watching young acts start out. Even more special, is that there is a culture of being quiet and listening while the musicians are playing – In fact, this is actually quite enforced. It is very nice to help young acts get more confident, and this is why it is often one of the places that young acts start out.

Original music is very encouraged – there are many other places in Cape Town where you can do a full set of covers, but at the Barleycorn you are expected to be brave enough to reveal what you have written yourself. For those of you that follow me, you will notice that I joke about wearing a “cover-hat-of-shame” when I sing covers on HIVE posts, and only go without a hat when I sing an original – that kind of joke stems from my time at the Barleycorn – Hahaha!

The venue that hosts the Barleycorn Music Club has changed several times over the years. My parents remember going to the Constantia Nek restaurant in the old days. I remember going to the Riverclub as a school kid, and then Rygersdal Sports Club and Villagers Rugby Club back in more recent times when I was on the committee. Recently the Barleycorn Music Club lost its venue at very short notice due to the Restaurant that hosted them being taken over and the new tenants deciding they wanted a change without time for the Music Club to find a new venue. For the past couple of months, it has been very sad to know that the Barleycorn wasn’t having it’s special Monday night showcases, and was desperately looking for a new home!

As of last Monday, they finally found one! It sounded strange – a venue called Isabella’s Grills located inside the Wynberg Military Base? How nice could that be? I decided to go check out the re-opening night – Barleycorn’s first Monday night showcase at the new venue. I was pleasantly surprised to see a very attractive venue where everyone had a good focus on the stage, and that the sound was probably better than the previous venu

The place was packed. Because the Barleycorn was celebrating it’s return, they had invited three of their favourite regular acts.

1. Wayne Pauli – A stellar blues-rock and folk songwriter. He brought along with elderly father to play bass for him which was wonderful to see. He’s the first 5 minutes of the video.

2. Jenny and the Jameses. Jennifer Eaves on guitar, James Hall on violin and James Harvey on accordion (and occasionally other folky instruments like mandolin or the Bodhran). These guys do stunning songs with three part harmonies, inspired by Irish traditional music. They are the second 5 minutes of the video. Apparently, since I used to watch them, Jennifer has married James Hall and they have a baby on the way! James Harvey had apparently been out of the country, and this was basically a reunion gig for them!

3. John Ellis and the Electric. John Ellis used to front a popular band called Tree 63 when I was much younger. Recently, he seems to have moved to Cape Town from Durban and is having lots of fun with our music scene. On this night, the Electric decided to have a party by playing covers paying homage to what was popular music on the South African rock music scene in the 1980s and 1990s. The cover song they are doing at the end of the video is “Taximan” by Evoid, a band that had some awesome songs in the 1980s, that still get played on SA radio to this day.

So, I had a great evening. When I used to watch acts that are amazing, I used to find it a bit demoralising, but Monday night was inspiring for me. I think I could at least follow what everyone was doing to sound so good, and I think that I am learning to accept that music is a tribe, rather than a competition!

Nevertheless, @clairemobey and I have been asked to do a MobeyDick set at the Barleycorn Music Club’s new venue on Monday 10 July, which is just around the corner, so we are frantically organising a set list to polish up! We are excited and nervous – the calibre of these artists that were especially invited for the Barleycorns first night back on the scene was extremely high of course – but we just want to keep improving our own performances as we have been doing every time we have played so far - so please wish us luck!!!

El lugar estaba lleno. Debido a que Barleycorn estaba celebrando su regreso, habían invitado a tres de sus actos regulares favoritos.

1. Wayne Pauli: un compositor estelar de blues-rock y folk. Trajo a su anciano padre para que tocara el bajo para él, lo cual fue maravilloso de ver. Son los primeros 5 minutos del video.

2. Jenny y los James. Jennifer Eaves a la guitarra, James Hall al violín y James Harvey al acordeón (y ocasionalmente otros instrumentos folclóricos como la mandolina o el Bodhran). Recientemente, parece haberse mudado a Ciudad del Cabo desde Durban y se está divirtiendo mucho con nuestra escena musical. En esta noche, The Electric decidió hacer una fiesta tocando versiones en homenaje a lo que fue la música popular en la escena musical rock sudafricana en los años 80 y 90. Sin embargo, a @clairemobey y a mí nos pidieron que hiciéramos un set de MobeyDick en el nuevo local del Barleycorn Music Club el lunes 10 de julio, que está a la vuelta de la esquina, ¡así que estamos organizando frenéticamente una lista de canciones para pulir!
