Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

Let’s get cracking with Number 10 on my list: Gordon Lightfoot!

He was a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Canada. He has been referred to as Canada’s greatest song-writer, which is pretty amazing when you remember that Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, Alanis Morisette and many other legendary songwriters are (or were) from Canada as well!

He is credited for helping define that folk-pop sound that we all remember from the 1960s and 1970s. It was his song “If You Could Read my Mind” from 1970 that really seemed to be a turning point in his career where the international world started paying attention, and so that is the one I will try and cover today!

Other big hits that came after that include “Sundown”, “Rainy Day People”, “Carefree Highway” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” also in the 1970s. Because of this, he was named the Canadian male recording artist of the decade in 1980, among many other awards. He died of natural causes at the age of 84 in April 2023. May he Rest in Peace!
