Graba noche y días, grillos y canarios
Martillos, turbinas, ladridos, chubascos
Madre, amigo, hermano, y luz alumbrando
Hive Open Mic WEEK 143 // Thanks to life // @aly.squid (Spanish/English)
A friendly greeting dear hivers, I hope this year has started wonderfully for everyone, this is my first publication of 2023 and it is all a pleasure that it is for the open mic. The theme of this first week of the year is The Voice of Hope, it could not be any other, every year we start with new hopes and new dreams, the first days open in front of us as a beautiful promise that invites us to live more and live better.
For this occasion I chose the emblematic song "Gracias a la vida" by the transcendental Chilean artist Violeta Parra. This song was composed in 1966 when Violeta was in Bolivia, specifically in La Paz. It has been interpreted by a great number of artists and is considered a hymn of love in the continent and in the world, for its humanist content. It is a long and monotonous composition but with an exceptional depth, like most of Violeta Parra's songs.
On the other hand, this beautiful song and its author have been stigmatized by some people who claim that it is ironic and contradictory that a year after the release of Gracias a la Vida Violeta committed suicide. Personally I think it is a rather superficial idea, in reality Violeta Parra was a rebellious woman, who confronted the elites to dignify the expressions of popular art, she was a prodigious artist and at the same time misunderstood. She was a prodigious and at the same time misunderstood artist. A master of herself, in a time when women were nothing of the sort, it is not surprising that the act of voluntarily interrupting her life was her last manifesto of freedom and in fact one of those that immortalized her.
Another of the ideas that are held about Violeta's suicide is that she did it out of spite, for her lover Gilbert Favre. The truth is that in our continent several of our female artists have committed suicide, the most shocking were Violeta Parra and Alfonsina Storni, both suicides are attributed to love reasons, when in fact the two artists faced very strong social conditions, Alfonsina was not only abandoned by her partner with a son, but was socially and artistically branded for being a single mother. In Violeta's case, she always saw life from a political point of view, she was very critical and subversive, she was afflicted by the neglect of popular culture in her country and the little interest there was in folklore on the part of the people and the authorities.
So we cannot think that the reasons for her suicide were so vain and superficial, when Violenta immersed us in the depths of human existence in each of her compositions. That's why I chose this song to open the year in Open Mic, because hope can manifest itself in many ways, because there is no hope without consciousness. I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoy it, of course always in the company of my beloved @jetta.amaya.
Letter
Thanks to life, that has given me so much
It gave me two stars, that when I open them
Perfect I distinguish black from white
And in the high sky, its starry bottom
And in the crowds, the man I love
Thanks to life, which has given me so much
It has given me the ear, that in all its breadth
It records night and day, crickets and canaries
Hammers, turbines, barks, squalls
And the voice so tender of my well loved one
Thanks to life, which has given me so much
It has given me the sound and the alphabet
With it, the words that I think and declare
Mother, friend, brother, and light illuminating
The path of the soul of the one I love
Thanks to life, which has given me so much
It has given me the march of my tired feet
With them, I walked cities and puddles
Beaches and deserts, mountains and plains
And your house, your street and your courtyard
Thanks to life, which has given me so much
It gave me the heart, that shakes its frame
When I look at the fruit of the human brain
When I look at the good so far from the bad
When I look into the depths of your clear eyes
Thanks to life, which has given me so much
It has given me laughter and it has given me weeping
So I distinguish joy from sorrow
The two materials that form my song
And the song of you that is the same song
And the song of all that is my own song
Thanks to life
