The vibes and the salsa || El vibráfono y la salsa

I have written the musical arrangements for three group formats that can accompany me. The smallest of them is a sextet and we usually say that it is in the style of Joe Cuba, because in addition to him also having had a sextet, the singing instrument was a vibraphone.

But this instrument has a singular history and few know how it came to be one of the instruments used in salsa.

With the name of vibraphone it was born in 1916, which was not very successful, but it was the one that inspired another one that initially carried the name of Vibraharp. This second instrument is the same that we know today with the first name. Only that in those days people had a tremendous confusion with both names and changed them without a clear sense. But since the first of them did not transcend, the name vibraphone (or just "vibes") remained definitively for this instrument that we know today.

It was the North American jazzman Lionel Hampton who found one, accidentally, began to study it and soon began to give it the diffusion that projected it, as one more instrument of jazz.

Of course, Latin jazz musicians also began to use it and Tito Puente was one of those who included it in his performances.

A musician of Swedish origin, who lived on the Atlantic coast of the United States, heard Puente using the vibraphone in these rhythms, copied the idea and returned to his homeland to venture into this instrument and these genres and became one of the most important referents of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Latin jazz. His name: Carl Tjader.

From Latin jazz to salsa, the step that was missing was very small. The first information we have is that it is precisely Joe Cuba, whose real name was Gilberto Miguel Calderón Cardona, who introduced it on a regular basis to these musical genres. From then on, there were many followers. Perhaps one worth mentioning is Louie Ramírez, already within the movement that had as its name: Salsa.

Also in Venezuela, the vibraphone has found great interpreters. As a group that stood out with this type of formation, there is the Grupo Mango.

At the present time, a name that must be mentioned, obligatorily, is Alfredo Naranjo. And I also include Germán Domador, who is the one that is playing with me.

Yo tengo escritos los arreglos musicales para tres formatos de grupo que me pueden acompañar. El más pequeño de ellos es un sexteto y solemos decir que es al estilo de Joe Cuba, porque además de él haber tenido también un sexteto, el instrumento cantante era un vibráfono.

Pero este instrumento tiene una historia singular y pocos saben cómo llegó a ser uno de los instrumentos usados en la salsa.

Con el nombre de vibráfono nació en 1916, que no tuvo mucho éxito, pero que fue el que inspiró otro que llevó inicialmente el nombre de Vibraharp. Este segundo instrumento es el mismo que conocemos hoy con el primer nombre. Solo que en aquellos tiempos la gente tenía una confusión tremenda con ambos nombres y los cambiaban sin un sentido claro. Pero en vista de que el primero de ellos no trascendió, el nombre de vibráfono quedó definitivamente para este instrumento que conocemos hoy.

Fue el jazzista norteamericano Lionel Hampton quien encontró uno, accidentalmente, empezó a estudiarlo y pronto le empezó a dar la difusión que lo proyectó, como un instrumento más del jazz.

Por supuesto, los músicos del jazz latino, también lo empezaron a usar y fue Tito Puente uno de los que lo incluyó en sus presentaciones.

Un músico de origen sueco, que vivía en la costa atlántica de Estados Unidos, escuchó a Puente usando el vibráfono en estos ritmos, se copió la idea y se regresó a su tierra a incursionar en este instrumento y en estos géneros y llegó a convertirse en uno de los referentes más importantes del jazz afrocubano y afrolatino. Su nombre: Carl Tjader.

Del jazz latino a la salsa, el paso que faltaba era muy pequeño. La primera información que tenemos es que es precisamente Joe Cuba, cuyo nombre real era Gilberto Miguel Calderón Cardona, quien lo introdujo en forma regular a estos géneros musicales. De allí en adelante, fueron muchos los seguidores. Quizá uno que valga la pena destacar es Louie Ramírez, ya dentro del movimiento que llevaba como nombre: Salsa.

También en Venezuela, el vibráfono ha encontrado grandes intérpretes. Como grupo que destacó con este tipo de formación, está el Grupo Mango.

E los actuales momentos, un nombre que hay que mencionar, obligatoriamente, es Alfredo Naranjo. Y yo incluyo además a Germán Domador, que es quien está tocando conmigo.
