Travel to Istanbul & Visit to Luthier Kemal Eroğlu and His Instrument Making Workshop

Hello everyone. I made a trip to Istanbul last week and today I want to talk to you a little bit about it. Let me first talk about the purpose of my travel. About a year ago, I ordered one of Turkey's most important instrument makers, luthier Kemal Eroğlu, to buy a new baglama.

Kemal Eroğlu has been practicing the profession of luthier for almost fifty years and has been making instruments for Turkey's most well-known baglama musicians such as Arif Sağ and Erdal Erzincan. He is doing this work in his workshop in Kartal district of Istanbul. His workshop is a small and authentic place of 60-70 m2, but he produces very high quality instruments here. I ordered him to have a very high quality instrument.

Let me briefly talk about the instrument making process. Since Kemal Eroğlu's order list is very busy, you have to wait for a long time when you place an order. When it's your turn, he starts making your instrument and does it with the same care, no matter who orders it. For this reason, it takes 30-40 days to make a baglama. If he feels that something is wrong while he is making the instrument, he starts breaking it again and continues until he finds the voice in his head. He generally prefers mahogany type trees in baglama production and combines the tree with the leaf form and builds the instrument boat. Then, it combines the instrument keyboard with the boat and starts polishing with polyester. After this and a few other procedures, he leaves the instrument to dry and all this takes 30-40 days.

As soon as my baglama was finished, I started making plans to go to Istanbul and buy my instrument as soon as he informed me. I thought it would be better to go and fetch it directly from him, because transporting an instrument using methods such as cargo would be a dangerous situation for such a valuable instrument. At the first opportunity, I bought the train tickets and went to the area where Kemal Eroğlu lived with my wife. While inviting us, he said that he wanted to host us and that he wanted to show us around Istanbul. We made our plans accordingly and went to Istanbul. When we first arrived at Kemal Eroğlu baglama workshop, I had the chance to meet my new baglama for the first time. After playing for a while and hearing his voice, I thanked him and went to their house on the upper floor of his workshop. By the way, we had a friend with paws in the workshop and he gave us a very difficult time at the end of the video you will watch. :)

After resting for a while at home on the first day, we took a long walk along the Kartal and Maltepe coastline. Then we went back home after chatting and eating something. On the second day, we took the ferry from Kartal pier to Büyükada. My wife and I were seeing Büyükada for the first time and we were fascinated. After returning from Büyükada, we entered the workshop and spent a long time in the workshop. In the meantime, we had the opportunity to examine the photographs in the workshop in detail. Some of these photographs were so old that they had turned the tiny instrument making workshop into a museum of musicians. For example, some well-known musicians in the photos are now deceased. We commemorated them a lot and dived into an in-depth conversation about music. Since Kemal Eroğlu has a very old background in the music scene, he hosted all the musicians we can know from television in his workshop and made baglama for them. Therefore, it would not be wrong to attribute the title of living memory of the recent past to Kemal Eroğlu.

After examining the photos and chatting, we took our baglama in our hands and played and sang for about two hours. Meanwhile, my wife @ozgeozdemiroglu recorded us. The video I shared in this post is one of these recordings. I suggest you watch till the end, it's a surprise ending. :)

When our music performance was completely finished, we left the baglama making workshop and went back to their house on the upper floor. I received my instrument with its case. Then, after sleeping and resting that night, we took the train from Pendik station in the morning and returned to Ankara, the city we live in.

By the way, I want to talk about one last thing. Luthier Kemal Eroğlu is someone who practices his profession with great love. For this reason, a documentary was shot years ago telling his story. The title of the documentary is "the tree that smiles in my face". In this documentary, he talks about his life and profession at length. Herkese merhabalar. Geçen hafta İstanbul'a bir seyahat yaptım ve bugün sizlere biraz bundan bahsetmek istiyorum. Önce sayahatimin amacından bahsedeyim. Yaklaşık bir yıl önce yeni bir bağlama almak için Türkiye'nin en önemli enstrüman yapımcılarından luthier Kemal Eroğlu'na sipariş verdim.

Kemal Eroğlu neredeyse elli yıldır luthierlik mesleğini icra eden ve Arif Sağ, Erdal Erzincan gibi Türkiye'nin en tanınan bağlama müzisyenlerine enstrüman yapan birisi. İstanbul'un Kartal ilçesindeki atölyesinde bu işi yapıyor. Atölyesi 60-70 m2 kadar küçük ve otantik bir yer fakat burada çok kaliteli enstrümanlar üretiyor. Ben de çok kaliteli bir enstrümana sahip olmak adına kendisine sipariş verdim.

Kısaca enstrüman yapım sürecinden de bahsedeyim. Kemal Eroğlu'nun sipariş listesi çok yoğun olduğu için sipariş verdiğinizde uzun süre beklemeniz gerekiyor. Sıra size geldiğinde sizin enstrümanınızı yapmaya başlıyor ve sipariş veren kim olursa olsun aynı özenle yapıyor. Bu sebeple bir bağlamanın yapımı 30-40 gün sürüyor. Eğer enstrümanı yaparken bir aksilik olduğunu hissederse kırıp yeniden yapmaya başlıyor ve kafasındaki sesi bulana kadar devam ediyor. Bağlama yapımında genelde maun tipi ağaçlar tercih ediyor ve ağacı yaprak formuyla birleştirip enstrüman teknesini kuruyor. Ardından enstrüman klavyesini tekne ile birleştirerek polyester ile cilalama işlemine geçiyor. Bu ve bunun gibi birkaç işlemden sonra enstrümanı kurumaya bırakıyor ve bütün bunlar 30-40 gün alıyor.

Benim bağlamamın yapımı bittiğinde kendisi haber verir vermez İstanbul'a gidip enstrümanımı almak için plan yapmaya başladım. Gidip doğrudan kendisinden alıp getirmenin daha doğru olduğunu düşünüyordum çünkü kargo gibi yöntemleri kullanarak enstrüman taşıtmak, bu kadar değerli bir enstrüman için tehlikeli bir durum olabilirdi. İlk fırsatta da tren biletlerini alıp eşimle birlikte Kemal Eroğlu'nun yaşadığı bölgeye gittim. Kendisi bizi davet ederken misafir etmek istediğini ve İstanbul'da gezdirmek istediğini söyledi. Biz de planımızı buna göre yaparak İstanbul'a gittik. Kemal Eroğlu bağlama atölyesine ilk vardığımızda yeni bağlamamla ilk kez karşılaşma şansım oldu. Bir süre çalıp sesini duyduktan sonra teşekkür ettim ve atölyesinin üst katındaki evlerine geçtik. Bu arada atölyede bir de patili arkadaşımız vardı ve izleyeceğiniz videonun sonunda bize epey zor anlar yaşattı. :)

İlk gün evde bir süre dinlendikten sonra Kartal ve Maltepe sahil hattı boyunca uzun bir yürüyüş yaptık. Ardından bir yerde sohbet edip bir şeyler yedikten sonra eve geri döndük. İkinci gün Kartal iskelesinden vapurla Büyükada'ya gittik. Büyükada'yı eşim ve ben ilk kez görüyorduk ve adeta büyülendik. Büyükada'dan döndükten sonra atölyeye girip uzunca bir süre atölyede geçirdik. Bu esnada hem atölyedeki fotoğrafları detaylı bir biçimde inceleme fırsatımız oldu. Bu fotoğrafların kimisi o kadar eskiydi ki, küçücük enstrüman yapım atölyesini sanki bir müzisyen müzesine çevirmişti. Örneğin, fotoğraflardaki bazı tanınmış müzisyenler şimdi hayatta değil. Onları da bolca yad ettik ve müzik üzerine derinlemesine bir sohbete daldık. Kemal Eroğlu müzik camiasında çok eski bir geçmişe sahip olduğu için bizim televizyonlardan tanıyabileceğimiz tüm müzisyenleri atölyesinde ağırlamış ve onlara bağlama yapmış birisi. Dolayısıyla Kemal Eroğlu'na yakın geçmişin canlı hafızası sıfatını yakıştırmak da hiç yanlış olmaz.

Fotoğrafları inceleyip sohbet ettikten sonra bağlamalarımızı elimize alarak yaklaşık iki saat boyunca çalıp söyledik. Bu esnada eşim @ozgeozdemiroglu bizi kayda da aldı. Bu postta paylaştığım video da bu kayıtlardan birisidir. Sonuna kadar izlemenizi öneririm, sürpriz sonludur. :)

Müzik icramız tamamen bittiğinde bağlama yapım atölyesinden çıkıp tekrar üst kattaki evlerine girdik. Esntrümanımı da kılıfıyla birlikte teslim aldım. Ardından o gece uyuyup dinlendikten sonra sabah saatlerinde Pendik istasyonundan trene binip yaşadığımız şehir Ankara'ya döndük.

Bu arada son bir şeyden daha bahsetmek istiyorum. Luthier Kemal Eroğlu mesleğini büyük bir aşkla yapan birisi. Bu sebeple yıllar önce kendi hikayesini anlatan bir belgesel çekilmiş. Belgeselin adı da "yüzüme gülen ağaç". Bu belgeselde hayatını ve mesleğini uzun uzun anlatıyor. İngilizce altyazılı bir belgesel olduğu için rahatlıkla izleyebilirsiniz.
