Hello friends of HIVE, especially the community of The Chess Community. I bring you the sixth installment of the CHEESS SONATA series where I analyze games of great masters with classical background music according to the time.

    World Chess Championship 1907
    Marshall-Lasker

In 1907 the World Chess Championship was held in the United States, between the American challenger Frank Marshall and by then defending champion Emanuel Lasker of Germany.

Emanuel Lasker was the second world champion and had just defeated the Austrian Wilhelm Steinitz for the world title in 1894 and 1897.

Frank James Marshall, his challenger, was 27 years old and while Lasker was 40 years old.

Frank Marshall made great contributions to chess such as "the Marshall attack of the Spanish opening" and "the Marshall gambit in the semi-Slavic defense.

The game begins and Marshall proposes the Spanish opening, also known as Ruy López, to which Lasker responds with the Berlin defense, a defense that has currently been used successfully by grandmasters such as Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

After the central fight and each one putting his king to safety through short castlings Marshall decides to exchange two minor pieces. The result of these changes led to the deterioration of Lasker's queenside pawn structure; now has 3 "pawn islands", including doubled pawns on the "c" file while Marshall's pawn structure remains unscathed.

The German master immediately starts an attack against the black king with his queen, he also manages to clear the "f" file and now the black rook appears very threatening!

At this point (move 14) Lasker sacrifices his knight and advances with his pawn to d4 attacking the white bishop but Marshall will have to return the gift sooner or later, otherwise he will be subjected to a decisive attack against his king.

If, for example, Marshall makes the bad decision to preserve his advantage piece by moving 15. Bd2, black would respond with Bg4 attacking the white queen who could only take refuge on c1. Black will continue his attack with Kf2 threatening mate in 5 moves after Kxg2.

Aware of this, Marshall does not withdraw his bishop and decides to attack the black queen with the move g3 but this turns out to be the first serious mistake of the game, it was better to Qe2 and allow the capture of his bishop, leaving him with a slight advantage. The move g3 allowed Qh6, threatening to take the rook to f1 with a decisive attack, however in the game Lasker returned his queen to the f6 square.

Finally Marshall gives up his bishop and after the exchange of rooks and queen he quickly reaches an equal ending of knight and rook against bishop and rook.

In the end Marshall was greatly surpassed, the way he faced this end left much to be desired, to the point of allowing Lasker to have a "passed" pawn and be left without the option of "breaks" or any counterplay.

Seeing himself crushed, he decided to abandon after move 37 and in this way Lasker retained the title again.
