Aprendiendo a bailar salsa con mi mejor mentora - Learning to dance salsa with my best mentor

La salsa es un género musical y bailable que desde niño me ha encantado; puedo decir entonces que fue una herencia por parte de mi familia acá en el oriente de Venezuela, pues cada vez que iba yo a una celebración nunca podía faltar alguna pista de baile y muchas de las canciones de Willie Colón. Nunca me propuse a aprender a bailar salsa, aunque siempre terminaba bailando de forma loca y divertida. Me encantaba, además, ver a mi papá y mamá bailar, ¡vaya que eran y son muy buenos bailadores salseros! Cómo quería yo aprender algunos pasos, y mi mamá me vio en apuros, decidió ayudarme… fue muy divertido en verdad, aunque admito que debo pulir mis movimientos, jajaja.

Salsa is a musical and danceable genre that I have loved since I was a child; I can say then that it was an inheritance from my family here in eastern Venezuela, because every time I went to a celebration I could never miss a dance floor and many of Willie Colón's songs. I never set out to learn to dance salsa, although I always ended up dancing in a crazy and fun way. I also loved watching my dad and mom dance, wow they were and are very good salsa dancers! How I wanted to learn some steps, and my mom saw me in trouble, she decided to help me... it was really fun, although I admit that I have to polish my movements, hahaha.

Salsa bailable hay de todo tipo, algunos pasos son màs movidos que otros y la verdad incluso se considera cómo una actividad física que ayuda a la salud. Después de todo, mover los pies coordinadamente con tu pareja suele ser difícil si tu cuerpo es tan tieso como el de un robot, o sea, me incluyo en esa categoría. Como Willie Colón es uno de mis cantantes favoritos, elegí una canción que me parece muy acorde a estos tiempos: se llama “Talento de Televisión”, esbozada para las mujeres que suelen ganar una posición gracias a sus atributos sexuales y no a su trabajo duro. Esta es una de las canciones que más sonaba en las fiestas de la familia, y parece curioso que muy pocos se detenían a analizar un poco su significado, jajaja.

Ensayamos pasos durante al menos dos horas: fue muy chistoso intentar hacer una coreografía desde cero, más porque mi mamá baila muy bien y yo me perdía rápidamente entre sus giros y sus buenos pasos de baile. Quiero aclarara que ninguno de los dos somos profesionales en baile (sobre todo yo, XD) pero quisimos hacer algo que no fuera solo moverse de un lado a otro. Teníamos un espacio reducido por lo que fue difícil grabar el video, todavía más porque como pueden notarlo, soy alto (1.68 mts). Mi mamá es más baja pero no fue un problema… al final logramos coordinarnos bien.

There are all kinds of salsa dance, some steps are more active than others and the truth is even considered a physical activity that helps health. After all, moving your feet in coordination with your partner is usually difficult if your body is as stiff as a robot, which is to say, I include myself in that category. As Willie Colón is one of my favorite singers, I chose a song that seems very appropriate to these times: it's called “tv talent”, written for women who tend to gain a position thanks to their sexual attributes and not their hard work. . This is one of the songs that played the most at family parties, and it seems curious that very few stopped to analyze its meaning a bit, hahaha.

We rehearsed steps for at least two hours: it was very funny trying to do a choreography from scratch, especially because my mom dances very well and I quickly got lost between her turns and her good dance steps. I want to clarify that neither of us are professionals in dance (especially me, XD) but we wanted to do something that wasn't just moving from one side to the other. We had a small space, so it was difficult to record the video, even more so because, as you can see, I am tall (1.68 mts). My mom is shorter but it wasn't a problem…in the end we managed to coordinate well.

Luego de varios ensayos procedimos a ejecutar los pasos frente a la cámara. Verán, ¡no fue fácil! Jajaja. Lo intentamos una y otra vez, una y otra vez… hasta que por fin accedí a elegir la versión oficial de nuestro baile. Fue una jornada agobiante, aunque divertida; me encanta animar a mi mamá a cosas divertidas, todavía más después de todo por lo que ha pasado nuestra familia. Sin embargo, apuesto de cualquier forma a la felicidad y la sonrisa, que representan el mayor de los bienestares.

Agradezco a mi mejor mentora por ayudarme con esos pasos de baile que de seguro hubieran salido peor sin ella, LOL. No es fácil atreverse a hacer algo como esto, y menos si no tienes experiencia, aunque buenas y excelentes personas siempre te terminan animando.

After several rehearsals we proceeded to execute the steps in front of the camera. You see, it wasn't easy! Ha ha ha. We tried again and again, again and again… until I finally agreed to choose the official version of our dance. It was an exhausting day, although fun; I love encouraging my mom into fun things, even more so after all our family has been through. However, I bet in any way on happiness and a smile, which represent the greatest of well-being.

I thank my best mentor for helping me with those dance steps that surely would have turned out worse without her, LOL. It is not easy to dare to do something like this, especially if you do not have experience, although good and excellent people always end up encouraging you.
