By now, we have all heard about Disney's new live-action film: The Little Mermaid, whether we saw the movie or not. The truth is that behind all the comments that arose prior to its release, there is a great marketing team in charge of positioning this film in the top positions. However, today I want to share my impressions after leaving the movie theater.

Para estos tiempos, todos hemos escuchado hablar del nuevo live-action de Disney: La Sirenita, ya sea porque vimos la película o no. La verdad es que detrás de todos los comentarios que surgieron previos a su estreno, hay un gran equipo de marketing encargado de posicionar este film en los primeros puestos. Sin embargo, hoy quiero compartir mis impresiones al salir de la sala de cine.

The first thing I want to highlight is that this film is remarkably broad in terms of character development, which I appreciate, since, when remaking, I consider it important to add something to the original story. In this case, I see Ariel as someone who needs to express herself, but more than that, someone who needs to be heard. Ironically, that need makes her lose her voice.

Lo primero que quiero destacar es que esta película es notablemente amplia en cuanto al desarrollo de los personajes, lo cual agradezco, ya que, al hacer un remake, considero importante agregar algo a la historia original. En este caso, veo a Ariel como alguien que necesita expresarse, pero más que eso, alguien que necesita ser escuchada. Irónicamente, esa necesidad le hace perder su voz.

On the other hand, as for Prince Eric, I like that they develop him beyond just being a pretty boy. He is shown as a man with ambitions, who wants to take his people to a new level and develop with the times. The original film did not convey this.

Por otro lado, en cuanto al príncipe Eric, me gusta que lo desarrollen más allá de ser simplemente un chico bonito. Se muestra como un hombre con ambiciones, que desea llevar a su pueblo a un nuevo nivel y desarrollarse al ritmo de los tiempos. La película original no transmitía esto.

Last but not least, I want to mention Ursula, my favorite character in this installment. Not only because of the actress who plays her, but also because of her role in the story. We are made to understand that there is a familial relationship between her and King Triton, and that it is this fractured relationship that gives rise to her desire for revenge, leading us to all the situations presented in the film.

Finalmente, pero no menos importante, quiero mencionar a Úrsula, mi personaje favorito en esta entrega. No solo por la actriz que la interpreta, sino también por su papel en la historia. Nos hacen entender que existe una relación familiar entre ella y el rey Tritón, y que es esa relación fracturada la que da lugar a su deseo de venganza, llevándonos a todas las situaciones que se presentan en la película.

Now, let's talk about the controversies. Do you think it's right that The Little Mermaid should be white with red hair? Or do you think the choice of the character was right? My opinion is that the skin color has no relevance to the script of the film.

However, among all the media bombardment on this subject, I read that Ariel in this version represents the Caribbean, and it is true, since in the same film we are told about the prince's adventures in Venezuela, Peru and Colombia. In addition, Sebastian's accent gives us some clues in this regard, in addition to the Caribbean musical influence present in the film.

As for Halle Bailey, I must say that she was captivating at all times. Even in those where she doesn't speak, her spontaneity and naivety comes across off screen. I think her choice as the teenage mermaid was pretty much spot on.

Ahora, hablemos de las controversias. ¿Te parece correcto que La Sirenita deba ser blanca con cabello rojo? ¿O crees que la elección del personaje estuvo acertada? Mi opinión al respecto es que el color de piel no tiene relevancia para el guion del film.

Sin embargo, entre todo el bombardeo mediático sobre este tema, leí que Ariel en esta versión representa al Caribe, y es cierto, ya que en la misma película nos hablan de las aventuras del príncipe por Venezuela, Perú y Colombia. Además, el acento bien marcado de Sebastián nos da algunas pistas al respecto, sumado a la influencia musical caribeña presente en la película.

En cuanto a Halle Bailey, debo decir que fue cautivadora en todo momento. Incluso en aquellos en los que no habla, su espontaneidad e ingenuidad se transmiten fuera de la pantalla. Creo que su elección como la sirena adolescente fue bastante acertada.

Now, one negative point I must mention is the lighting, which was somewhat disappointing. I understand that, being a film set in the deep sea, there shouldn't be so much lighting. However, at times I got lost in some scenes because I didn't understand what it was all about. I think they could have worked a little more on those details.

Ahora, un punto negativo que debo mencionar es la iluminación, la cual fue algo decepcionante. Entiendo que, al tratarse de una película ambientada en las profundidades del mar, no debería haber tanta iluminación. Sin embargo, en ocasiones me perdí en algunas escenas por no entender de qué se trataba. Creo que podrían haber trabajado un poco más en esos detalles.

Without a doubt, I think everyone should see this movie, especially those who saw it when we were little. After leaving the movie theater, they will be able to forge their own conclusions without being influenced by the reviews.

This live-action version is mature and shows us aspects of the protagonists' lives that, in some way, make us identify with them. I invite all those who have not yet seen it to go and see it. You will not regret it.

Sin duda, creo que todos deberían ver esta película, especialmente aquellos que la vieron cuando éramos pequeños. Después de salir de la sala de cine, podrán forjarse sus propias conclusiones sin dejarse influenciar por las críticas.

Esta versión live-action es madura y nos muestra aspectos de la vida de los protagonistas que, de alguna manera, nos hacen identificarnos con ellos. Les invito a todos aquellos que aún no la han visto a que se animen y vayan a verla. No se arrepentirán.
