HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 26 Second Round (ENG-ESP): Featuring my baby daughter's toy xylophone!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 26 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the fourth instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” was the Kazoo, which is easy to learn once you realise you must hum rather than blow!

The second “Instrument of the Week” was the Pennywhistle, which is actually played in a traditional South African music style called “Kwela”… The pennywhistle is not only used in Traditional Irish jigs (like The Dubliners or The Pogues) at all!

The third “Instrument of the Week” was my grandfather’s old autoharp. With a single button, you mute all the strings except those that make up the chord you have chosen, so it’s easy to play… the hard part was tuning the old thing! Hahaha!

Now it time for the fourth “Instrument of the Week” – My toddler daughter’s toy xylophone!

My daughter Madison is 20 months old now. She loves to blow on pennywhistles and harmonicas! She also loves to plonk on a piano when we can find one! Unfortunately, we don’t have a piano or keyboard (yet?) but I bought her this little xylophone from a toy shop in the meantime! It has the full do-re-mi scale in C major (C D E F G A B c).

That’s good enough for the basic melody between the verses on Gotye and Kimbra’s massive hit from 2011: “Somebody That I Used to Know”! Let’s give it a shot, with help from a loop pedal to record and play back the basic guitar chord structure that the xylophone part is played over, before playing guitar live on the other parts...

As a joke, I quickly change my “cover hat of shame” to be more lady-like for Kimbra’s verse – so please forgive the minor breaks in continuity! Hahaha!

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad de Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 26 / Ronda 2 del Hive Music Festival!

Después de hacer solo canciones originales durante las primeras 22 semanas, hace cuatro semanas comencé a usar el “Cover Hat of Shame”. *(Cuando comencé a tocar música en público, uno de los primeros lugares a los que fui fue el Barleycorn Music Club, que animaba mucho a probar nuestras canciones originales con la audiencia. Incluso me uní al comité organizador para poner el pequeño conciertos por un tiempo. Entonces, ¡mi broma sobre el "sombrero de la vergüenza" se originó en esos días! ¡Jajaja!) *

Pero… ¡No quiero simplemente tocar cualquier versión antigua para el Hive Music Festival! Ustedes son mis amigos y merecen algo especial... ¡un esfuerzo especial de mi parte! Entonces, pensé en desafiarme a mí mismo así: Mis instrumentos principales son la guitarra y las armónicas: ¿Qué pasaría si tuviera que asegurarme de que por cada versión que haga para el Hive Music Festival durante las próximas semanas, debo usar un instrumento diferente como bueno, para poner a prueba mi creatividad y habilidad para aprender y jugar con diferentes sonidos nuevos?

Y así, esta semana es la cuarta entrega de una nueva serie de entradas de HMF llamada "Instrumento loco de la semana". ¡Jajaja! ¡Ahora me veré como un principiante! ¡Lo cual está bien! ¡Aquí todos somos amigos!

El primer “Instrumento de la semana” fue el Kazoo, que es fácil de aprender una vez que te das cuenta de que debes tararear en lugar de soplar.

El segundo "Instrumento de la semana" fue el Pennywhistle, que en realidad se toca en un estilo de música tradicional sudafricano llamado "Kwela"... ¡El pennywhistle no solo se usa en los jigs tradicionales irlandeses (como The Dubliners o The Pogues) en absoluto!

El tercer “Instrumento de la semana” fue el viejo arpa automática de mi abuelo. Con un solo botón silencias todas las cuerdas excepto las que componen el acorde que hayas elegido, por lo que es fácil de tocar... ¡lo difícil fue afinar lo antiguo! ¡Jajaja!

Ahora es el momento del cuarto "Instrumento de la semana": ¡el xilófono de juguete de mi hija pequeña!

Mi hija Madison tiene ahora 20 meses. ¡Le encanta tocar silbatos y armónicas! ¡También le encanta tocar un piano cuando podemos encontrar uno! Lamentablemente, no tenemos piano ni teclado (¿todavía?), ¡pero mientras tanto le compré este pequeño xilófono en una tienda de juguetes! Tiene la escala do-re-mi completa en Do mayor (C D E F G A B c).

Eso es lo suficientemente bueno para la melodía básica entre los versos del gran éxito de Gotye y Kimbra de 2011: ¡"Alguien que solía conocer"! Vamos a intentarlo, con la ayuda de un pedal de bucle para grabar y reproducir la estructura básica de acordes sobre la que se toca la parte del xilófono.

Como broma, rápidamente cambio mi “sombrero de la vergüenza” para ser más femenino para el verso de Kimbra, ¡así que perdonen las pequeñas interrupciones en la continuidad! ¡Jajaja!
