HIVE OPEN MIC #178 (ENG/ESP): People - "Rich Men North of Richmond" by Oliver Anthony

Welcome to Week 178 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge. The theme for this week is the is “People”!

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve decided to alter my Three Tune Tuesday posts to be based around the Hive Open Mic theme of the week, and how I would go about tackling it. This week, I found the theme of “People” so open-ended that I was stumped. I decided to try and make a phrase out of it that would give me focus and came up with “Songs for the People”! Now it sounds like I should be singing songs that cry out about the fate of the poor and working class people trapped in a system created by the Politicians and the Big Business elite!

There are still plenty of songs to choose from, but now I could focus on them! My first two suggestions were “Working Class Hero” by John Lennon (famously covered more recently by Green Day) and “Subcity” by Tracy Chapman, with its poetic line “Give Mr. President my honest regards for disregarding me”.

However, the song I’m going to do today is much newer than that, and has gone viral over the last three weeks, causing a lot of political debate in the USA. It is a simple, 4-chord song played by one man (who calls himself Oliver Anthony) on a resonator guitar (often called a Dobro after the most common kind). The song is called “Rich Men North of Richmond” and is a rousing cry of the fate of the working class, and a scathing critique of the Politicians and Elite in Washington D.C (just north of Richmond) that have created the issues and system that keep the working class down. Here is the original:

The USA is incredibly polarised politically at the moment, and at first the song seemed to unite both the left and the right into agreeing that the song was authentic and heartfelt, and really summarised the feelings of the working class people in the USA… that times are incredibly hard, the dollar is not keeping up with rising prices, and that taxes are too high… and that it’s the fault of the Elite and the Politicians.

Of course, the media and the Politicians can’t handle that, so they have focused on one or two controversial lines, as well as the fact that right-wing personalities like Matt Walsh, Ben Shapiro and Stephen Crowder were praising the song, and have decided to label Oliver Anthony and his overnight success as a “Right-Wing Plant”!

Oliver Anthony himself claims to be quite central politically, neither too left nor too right. He seems confused that people are trying to say his song is far-right…

I think that the controversial lines should spark debate, and this is why I think the left-wing were embracing the song too (until the media is now telling them not to!). Here’s how I would tackle it:

“Your dollar ain’t shit and it’s taxed to no end!”

Well a right-wing person would argue that taxes should be decreased in general and that people should try look after themselves more. The left-wing would argue that the song is clearly from the point of view of the struggling working class, and that rich people should pay more tax so that poor people can pay less…

“I wish Politicians would look out for miners, not just minors on an island somewhere…”

To me this is a clear reference to Epstein Island and how we still have not seen a full list of who actually went there. However, seeing as both Donald Trump and the Clintons have been linked to Epstein – a full list may just be pretty terrible for both sides of the political divide in the USA?

“Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothing to eat, and the obese milking welfare… Well God if you’re 5 foot 3 and you’re three hundred pounds, taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds…”

Well, probably the line that the left-wing people have jumped on as the more controversial one! Right-wing people would argue that you do get people who abuse welfare (or the dole in the UK) and that it should be much harder to stay on welfare if you are capable of working an honest job. Left-wing people might argue that in poor parts of the USA, fast food is the cheapest and most available food and that it can be very difficult for poor people to eat healthy food, and that perhaps something needs to be done for welfare to assist people in eating healthier and combatting USA’s obesity problems…

So personally, I think the song could be an anthem for the “people” on both sides of the fence, and I think what is scaring the Politicians and the Elite, is that the song may unite the ordinary people on both sides of the political divide to realise that they get shafted by Politicians on both sides no matter who you vote for!

Esta semana encontré el tema “Personas” tan abierto que me quedé perplejo. ¡Decidí intentar hacer una frase que me diera concentración y se me ocurrió “Canciones para la gente”! ¡Ahora parece que debería cantar canciones que clamen por el destino de los pobres y de la clase trabajadora atrapados en un sistema creado por los políticos y la élite de las grandes empresas!

Todavía hay muchas canciones para elegir, ¡pero ahora puedo concentrarme en ellas! Mis dos primeras sugerencias fueron “Working Class Hero” de John Lennon (famosa versión más reciente de Green Day) y “Subcity” de Tracy Chapman, con su línea poética “Dale al Sr. Presidente mis sinceros saludos por ignorarme”.

Sin embargo, la canción que voy a hacer hoy es mucho más nueva que eso y se ha vuelto viral durante las últimas tres semanas, provocando mucho debate político en Estados Unidos. Es una canción sencilla de 4 acordes interpretada por un hombre (que se hace llamar Oliver Anthony) con una guitarra resonadora (a menudo llamada Dobro, por el tipo más común). La canción se llama “Hombres ricos al norte de Richmond” y es un grito conmovedor sobre el destino de la clase trabajadora y una crítica mordaz a los políticos y la élite en Washington D.C (justo al norte de Richmond) que han creado los problemas y el sistema que mantener a la clase trabajadora abajo. Aquí está el original:

Estados Unidos está increíblemente polarizado políticamente en este momento, y al principio la canción pareció unir tanto a la izquierda como a la derecha al coincidir en que la canción era auténtica y sentida, y realmente resumía los sentimientos de la clase trabajadora en los Estados Unidos... esos tiempos. son increíblemente duros, el dólar no sigue el ritmo del aumento de precios, y los impuestos son demasiado altos... y eso es culpa de la élite y los políticos.

Creo que las líneas controvertidas deberían generar debate, y es por eso que creo que la izquierda también abrazó la canción (¡hasta que los medios ahora les dicen que no lo hagan!). Así es como lo abordaría:

“¡Su dólar no es una mierda y está sujeto a impuestos sin fin!”

Bueno, una persona de derechas diría que los impuestos deberían reducirse en general y que la gente debería tratar de cuidarse más. La izquierda argumentaría que la canción es claramente desde el punto de vista de la clase trabajadora en lucha, y que los ricos deberían pagar más impuestos para que los pobres puedan pagar menos...

“Me gustaría que los políticos cuidaran de los mineros, no sólo de los menores en una isla en algún lugar…”

Para mí, esto es una clara referencia a la isla Epstein y a cómo todavía no hemos visto una lista completa de quiénes realmente fueron allí. Sin embargo, dado que tanto Donald Trump como los Clinton han sido vinculados con Epstein, ¿una lista completa puede ser bastante terrible para ambos lados de la división política en Estados Unidos?

"Señor, tenemos gente en la calle, no tenemos nada que comer, y el bienestar de los ordeños obesos... Bueno, Dios, si mides 5 pies 3 y pesas trescientas libras, los impuestos no deberían pagar tus bolsas de rondas de dulce de azúcar…”

Bueno, ¡probablemente la línea que la gente de izquierda ha adoptado como la más controvertida! La gente de derecha argumentaría que hay gente que abusa de la asistencia social (o del subsidio de desempleo en el Reino Unido) y que debería ser mucho más difícil seguir recibiendo asistencia social si uno es capaz de tener un trabajo honesto. La gente de izquierda podría argumentar que en las zonas pobres de EE. UU., la comida rápida es la comida más barata y más disponible y que puede ser muy difícil para los pobres comer alimentos saludables, y que tal vez sea necesario hacer algo para que la asistencia social ayude. personas para comer más sano y combatir los problemas de obesidad en EE. UU....

Personalmente, creo que la canción podría ser un himno para la “gente” de ambos lados de la valla, y creo que lo que asusta a los políticos y a la élite es que la canción puede unir a la gente común y corriente de ambos lados de la barrera política. ¡Divídete para darte cuenta de que los políticos de ambos lados los engañan sin importar por quién votes!
