HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 28 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Fishin' Blues" by Taj Mahal, featuring the Uke!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from a small coastal town about 90 minutes East of Cape Town in South Africa! It is a long weekend, and I am on holiday! Welcome to Week 28 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the sixth instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” was the Kazoo, which is easy to learn once you realise you must hum rather than blow!

The second “Instrument of the Week” was the Pennywhistle, which is actually played in a traditional South African music style called “Kwela”… The pennywhistle is not only used in Traditional Irish jigs (like The Dubliners or The Pogues) at all!

The third “Instrument of the Week” was my grandfather’s old autoharp. With a single button, you mute all the strings except those that make up the chord you have chosen, so it’s easy to play… the hard part was tuning the old thing! Hahaha!

The fourth “Instrument of the Week” was my toddler daughter’s toy xylophone (although I believe a xylophone with metal keys is actually called a “glockenspiel”!)

The fifth “Instrument of the Week” was a bamboo zither instrument that they call a “Valiha” in Madagascar!

Now it time for the sixth “Instrument of the Week” – My toddler daughter’s Ukelele

The Ukelele is actually a very popular instrument lately, and is really not that wacky at all, but it is what I remembered to grab as we packed the car for a holiday!

It is like a four string mini-guitar made famous in Hawaii!

For those of you who are from Venezuela and are familiar with the cuatro… The cuatro is usually tuned A D F# B, and the B string is tuned down an octave to be nearly as deep as the A string.
With the ukelele it is the complete opposite! The ukelele is usually tuned G C E A, but the G string is tuned an octave up to be nearly as high as the A string, which gives it a distinctive happy sound.

I find the sound quite bright. I sometimes like to take Prestik (tic-tac: the sticky stuff you use to hang a poster on the wall) and place it over the bridge to mute the strings in a similar way to palm-muting.

This can make the ukelele sound a bit more like a banjo, which is perfect for the song I’m going to cover, “Fishin’ Blues” by the fabulous blues artist Taj Mahal!

El primer "Instrumento de la semana" fue el Kazoo, que es fácil de aprender una vez que te das cuenta de que debes tararear en lugar de soplar.

El ukelele es en realidad un instrumento muy popular últimamente, y en realidad no es tan raro, ¡pero es lo que recordé agarrar mientras empacábamos el auto para unas vacaciones!

¡Es como una miniguitarra de cuatro cuerdas que se hizo famosa en Hawái!

Para aquellos de ustedes que son de Venezuela y están familiarizados con el cuatro... El cuatro generalmente se afina A D F # B, y la cuerda B se afina ** abajo ** una octava para ser casi tan profunda como la cuerda A.
