HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 27 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Memories" by Maroon 5, featuring the Valiha!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 27 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

After doing only original songs for the first 22 weeks, four weeks ago I started wearing the “Cover Hat of Shame”. (When I started playing music in public, one of the first places I went to was called the Barleycorn Music Club, which heavily encouraged that we try out our original songs on the audience. I even joined the organising committee to put on the little gigs for a while. So, my “cover hat of shame” joke originates from those days! Hahaha!)

But… I don’t want to just play any old cover for the Hive Music Festival! You guys are my friends and deserve something special… a special effort from me! So, I thought I would challenge myself like this: My main instruments are guitar and harmonicas: What if I had to ensure that for every cover I do for the Hive Music Festival over the next few weeks, that I must use a different instrument as well, to test my creativity and ability to learn and play with different new sounds?

And so – this week is the fourth instalment of a new series of HMF Entries called “Wacky Instrument of the Week”. Hahaha! Now I am going to look like a beginner! Which is fine! We are all friends here!

The first “Instrument of the Week” was the Kazoo, which is easy to learn once you realise you must hum rather than blow!

The second “Instrument of the Week” was the Pennywhistle, which is actually played in a traditional South African music style called “Kwela”… The pennywhistle is not only used in Traditional Irish jigs (like The Dubliners or The Pogues) at all!

The third “Instrument of the Week” was my grandfather’s old autoharp. With a single button, you mute all the strings except those that make up the chord you have chosen, so it’s easy to play… the hard part was tuning the old thing! Hahaha!

The fourth “Instrument of the Week” was my toddler daughter’s toy xylophone (although I believe a xylophone with metal keys is actually called a “glockenspiel”!)

Now it time for the fifth “Instrument of the Week” – The Valiha!

When my friend Ryan Cooper emigrated to Canada, he had to pack up everything in his house. He landed up finding a souvenir that his in-laws (wife’s parents) brought back from the Comoros Islands off South East Africa. He decided to give this basic musical instrument to me. A bit of research meant that I learn that they have the same instrument in Madagascar (the large island off South East Africa), and they call it a valiha over there!

It is basically a bamboo zither – a carved bamboo with tight strings surrounding it. I realised I could shift little bamboo “frets” up and down each string to change the tone that I would get out of each when I plucked it. I then started tuning it in a way that would suit me…

If you consider the “Do Re Mi” major scale… you have 7 notes…
Let’s use the C major scale as an example, the Do Re Mi (or 1, 2, 3) would be C D E F G A B c

The 1st Major Chord (eg. C major) is 1, 3 and 5 (C, E and G) – so I tuned those right next to each other so I could pluck all three notes at the same time.

Then remember that the 6th Minor (eg A minor) is 6, 1 and 3 (A, C and E) – so I tuned the next string to 6, so that I could go from the 1st major to the 6th Minor by moving changing only 1 of the 3 strings I pluck.

Eventually that pattern leads to:
4, 6, 1, 3, 5, 7, 2

And if you look carefully, those strings lead to the five main chords of the key all right next to each other.
4, 6, 1 is the 4th major (or F major)
6, 1, 3 is the 6th minor (or A minor)
1, 3, 5 is the 1st major (or C major)
3, 5, 7 is the 3rd minor (or E minor)
5, 7, 2 is the 5th major (or G major)

So that’s how I tuned it! (Except I did it in the F major scale instead, just to confuse you some more… Hahaha!)

That’s good enough for the chord pattern on Maroon 5’s beautiful but simple song “Memories”, where I just pluck each chord once and then tap the bamboo percussively before moving onto the next chord! Let’s give it a shot!

I have later discovered that the Valiha is supposed to be played with both hands in a stable position, which means that it should be tuned far more like an African thumb piano (mbira or kalimba) with the deep notes in the middle and higher and higher on either side… probably turning my pattern into …3, 1, 6, 4, 2, 1, 3, 5, 7, 2…

I look forward to trying to make a better (louder!) version (than the tourist souvenir I have) myself and trying to play it in the correct style and tuning. I wonder if PVC pipe would work as well?

El primer “Instrumento de la semana” fue el Kazoo, que es fácil de aprender una vez que te das cuenta de que debes tararear en lugar de soplar.

El segundo "Instrumento de la semana" fue el Pennywhistle, que en realidad se toca en un estilo de música tradicional sudafricano llamado "Kwela"... ¡El pennywhistle no solo se usa en los jigs tradicionales irlandeses (como The Dubliners o The Pogues) en absoluto!

El tercer “Instrumento de la semana” fue el viejo arpa automática de mi abuelo. Con un solo botón silencias todas las cuerdas excepto las que componen el acorde que hayas elegido, por lo que es fácil de tocar... ¡lo difícil fue afinar lo antiguo! ¡Jajaja!

El cuarto "Instrumento de la semana" fue el xilófono de juguete de mi hija pequeña (¡aunque creo que un xilófono con teclas de metal en realidad se llama "glockenspiel"!)

Ahora es el momento del quinto "Instrumento de la semana": ¡El Valiha!

Cuando mi amigo Ryan Cooper emigró a Canadá, tuvo que empacar todo en su casa. Aterrizó y encontró un recuerdo que sus suegros (los padres de la esposa) trajeron de las Islas Comoras, en el sudeste de África. Decidió regalarme este instrumento musical básico. Un poco de investigación significó que me enteré de que tienen el mismo instrumento en Madagascar (la isla grande en el sudeste de África), ¡y lo llaman valiha allí!

Básicamente es una cítara de bambú, un bambú tallado con cuerdas apretadas que lo rodean. Me di cuenta de que podía mover pequeños "trastes" de bambú hacia arriba y hacia abajo en cada cuerda para cambiar el tono que saldría de cada una cuando las tocara. Luego comencé a ajustarlo de una manera que me convenía...

Si consideras la escala mayor “Do Re Mi”… tienes 7 notas…
Usemos la escala de C mayor como ejemplo, el Do Re Mi (o 1, 2, 3) sería C D E F G A B c

El primer acorde mayor (por ejemplo, Do mayor) es 1, 3 y 5 (C, E y G), así que los afiné uno al lado del otro para poder tocar las tres notas al mismo tiempo.

Luego recuerde que la sexta menor (por ejemplo, la menor) es 6, 1 y 3 (A, C y E), así que afiné la siguiente cuerda en 6, para poder pasar de la primera mayor a la sexta menor moviendo y cambiando. solo 1 de las 3 cuerdas que toco.

Eventualmente, ese patrón conduce a:
4, 6, 1, 3, 5, 7, 2

Y si miras detenidamente, esas cuerdas conducen a los cinco acordes principales de la clave, uno al lado del otro.
4, 6, 1 es el cuarto mayor (o F mayor)

¡Así es como lo sintonicé! (Excepto que lo hice en la escala de Fa mayor, solo para confundirte un poco más... ¡Jajaja!)

Eso es lo suficientemente bueno para el patrón de acordes en la hermosa pero simple canción "Memories" de Maroon 5, donde solo toco cada acorde una vez y luego toco el bambú con percusión antes de pasar al siguiente acorde. ¡Démosle una oportunidad!

Más tarde descubrí que se supone que el Valiha debe tocarse con ambas manos en una posición estable, lo que significa que debe afinarse mucho más como un piano de pulgar africano (mbira o kalimba) con las notas graves en el medio y más y más alto. en cualquier lado... probablemente convirtiendo mi patrón en... 3, 1, 6, 4, 2, 1, 3, 5, 7, 2...

Espero intentar hacer una versión mejor (¡más ruidosa!) (que el recuerdo turístico que tengo) yo mismo y tratar de tocarla con el estilo y la afinación correctos. Me pregunto si la tubería de PVC funcionaría también.
