MUSIC: Tribute to Artists We Lost in 2023 (ENG/ESP): PART 2 - Robbie Robertson (THE BAND)

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

Let’s get cracking with Number 2 on my list: Robbie Robertson of “THE BAND”. This was one of the sadder losses for me, because I am a huge fan of The Band’s own songs, and Robbie Robertson was the main songwriter…

The basic story is that Robbie Robertson was a fantastic Canadian guitarist who became Bob Dylan’s lead guitarist, and was the leader and main songwriter for a collection of brilliant musicians who were good enough to call themselves “The Band”! Along with being Bob Dylan’s band, “The Band” had brilliant original songs of their own, mostly written by Robbie Robertson.

He also became a movie scorewriter that worked with Martin Scorsese to provide music on films like “Raging Bull” and “Gangs of New York”.

I am mostly familiar with the work of “The Band” because of my parents. They had the Bob Dylan “Basement Tapes” that features The Band heavily, but much more than that, they had the albums from “The Last Waltz”, which was the name of the celebratory final concert that the band had in 1976 before retiring and most moving onto solo projects or other musical ventures.

Eventually my parents also had a DVD of “The Last Waltz”, which is a Martin Scorsese documentary by the same name about The Band and their “Last Waltz” concert.

What made the “Last Waltz” concert so special, is that The Band featured a line-up of probably the biggest collection of super-stars ever assembled up until that point…They had Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, The Staples, Muddy Waters, Neil Diamond, and so many more feature and sing their original songs along with The Band.

As much as I love all of the performances by the special guests singing their songs on “The Last Waltz”, perhaps some of my favourite songs are actually by “The Band” and written by Robbie Robertson himself.

The one I’m going to try and cover myself is an anti-war song called “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. You can see their fantastic performace at “The Last Waltz” with a small orchestra here:

Por mucho que me gusten todas las actuaciones de los invitados especiales cantando sus canciones en “The Last Waltz”, quizás algunas de mis canciones favoritas sean en realidad de “The Band” y escritas por el propio Robbie Robertson.
