HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 58 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 58 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

Today I would like to play “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This is quite a simple song to learn that follows the same structure throughout, and it has a very iconic and recognisable chorus. Because of this, people tend to cover it all the time! The original came out in 1989, which always surprises me because the kind of rock sound it uses reminds me far more of the 1970s, compared to most of the music that was coming out in the 1980s!

Now I am also a big fan of John Mayer. I think the guy has a great voice, great songs, brilliant stage presence and is in the top 10 guitarists of all time. Perhaps he’s a bit of a pop star… perhaps he has a bit of a reputation as a player with the celebrity ladies, but I still think he’s an amazing musician. Well, many years ago (15 years?) he did a fantastic, laid back, finger-picking styled cover of this song on acoustic guitar, accompanied by only two other guitarists (although one was playing slide guitar on a resonator-type guitar). None of them over-played or tried to turn the volume up on their part. They all just seemed to be perfectly in sync at making magic with each other…

They don’t even try to do the famous high-note of the chorus until the very end climax – the first choruses just sound beautiful, and emotional with the singers in harmony with each other. This seemed to make the song far less of a rock song, and far more an emotional journey… which is something I’m always interested in when trying to make music. So now, whenever I play this song, solo or with @Clairemobey – I like to be inspired by both versions so that I can play around with the emotion and intensity of the song… I hope you like my combination!

Hoy me gustaría tocar “Free Fallin’” de Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Esta es una canción bastante sencilla de aprender que sigue la misma estructura en todo momento y tiene un estribillo muy icónico y reconocible. ¡Debido a esto, la gente tiende a cubrirlo todo el tiempo! El original salió en 1989, lo que siempre me sorprende porque el tipo de sonido de rock que utiliza me recuerda mucho más a la década de 1970, en comparación con la mayor parte de la música que salía en la década de 1980.
