HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 70 First Round (ENG-ESP): "Baby One More Time" - Britney Spears

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 70 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival!

Today I would like to start a new theme for my Hive Music Festival entries. Sometimes as musicians we tend to take ourselves a little bit too seriously. I definitely remember doing this when I first started playing Open Mic nights and pubs when I was a younger man. Sometimes it’s important to remember that it’s okay to just have fun with our music!

One of the ways that I like to do this is to take a cheesy pop song and try and cover it on solo acoustic guitar. Will the song still be catchy and recognisable in its bare-bones form due to its chord structure, melody and hooks? Sometimes! Other times, the attempt seems to fall flat, and I then realise that what made the song stand out were probably special sounds/effects or something else to do with the production that I cannot emulate… it’s an interesting game to play!

So, I thought for the next three week cycle (or more if you enjoy it?) I would make a bit of a fool of myself, and replace my “cover hat” with my “cover wig” and tackle songs by such musical legends as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc…

Today I would like to start with Britney Spear’s first hit single “Baby One More Time”, released in late 1998, when Britney was just 16 years old. The song was actually written by Max Martin, who is a bit of a pop song-writing machine who is also a contributor to hits by everyone from the Backstreet Boys to Celine Dion, to Usher to Coldplay! Here is the original video that should make some of us nostalgic – I was only 13!

So, after playing the cover… the chord structure is interesting! The song is fun to sing! Whenever I’ve pulled this joke off at a “braai” (the South African/Afrikaans word for barbeque only it’s a big part of our culture here), my friends can’t seem to help but sing along to the memorable bits… I think that makes it a good song? Is that sacrilege and blasphemy, or do you agree?

Hola a todos en HIVE, y especialmente a la comunidad Music Zone. ¡Mi nombre es Jasper y les escribo (y canto) desde Ciudad del Cabo en Sudáfrica! ¡Bienvenidos a la Semana 70/Ronda 1 del Hive Music Festival!

Hoy me gustaría comenzar un nuevo tema para mis entradas al Hive Music Festival. A veces, como músicos, tendemos a tomarnos demasiado en serio. Definitivamente recuerdo haber hecho esto cuando comencé a tocar en pubs y noches de Open Mic cuando era más joven. ¡A veces es importante recordar que está bien simplemente divertirse con nuestra música!

Una de las formas en que me gusta hacer esto es tomar una canción pop cursi e intentar versionarla con un solo de guitarra acústica. ¿Seguirá siendo la canción pegadiza y reconocible en su forma básica debido a su estructura de acordes, melodía y ganchos? ¡A veces! Otras veces, el intento parece fracasar, y entonces me doy cuenta de que lo que hizo que la canción se destacara probablemente fueron sonidos/efectos especiales o algo más relacionado con la producción que no puedo emular... ¡es un juego interesante!
