HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 57 Third Round (ENG-ESP): "Suicidal Dream" by Silverchair

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 57 / Round 3 of the Hive Music Festival!

Two weeks I shifted a bit away from some of the older classic cover songs I have been doing (“Moondance” by Van Morrison, “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and songs by Simon &Garfunkel), and instead transported myself back to my youth in the 1990’s by attempting to cover “Under the Bridge” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I then decided this entire 3-week cycle should be dedicated to rock songs from the 1990’s!

So, last week I played “Wonderwall” by Oasis! It is a very “over-played” song, but one that is definitely gratifying to play on solo guitar because you can get a similar distinctive energy and sound all by yourself…

This week, let me complete the cycle with one more rock song from the 1990’s, although not as widely known and remembered as the first two! In 1995, a bunch of Australian 15 years-olds released a hard-rock album… to everyone’s surprise, the album “Frogstomp” by Silverchair was actually very good considering how young the bandmembers were, and it sold over 2 million copies!

One song that seemed particularly dark and poignant for 15-year-old kids to write is “Suicidal Dream” that apparently was inspired by the lead singer’s own struggles with mental health. Similar to “Wonderwall”, this song is very fun to play on your own because the riff is dark and distinctive enough that you feel like you are portraying the full energy and sound of the song all by yourself. Of course, it is also nothing like “Wonderwall”, with its much heavier energy approaching metal in the climax – this is where I get all high-pitched and passionate in my cover attempt – hahaha!

En dos semanas me alejé un poco de algunos de los covers clásicos más antiguos que había estado haciendo (“Moondance” de Van Morrison, “Hallelujah” de Leonard Cohen y canciones de Simon & Garfunkel) y, en cambio, me transporté de regreso a mi juventud en el década de 1990 al intentar hacer un cover de “Under the Bridge” de los Red Hot Chili Peppers. ¡Entonces decidí que todo este ciclo de tres semanas debería dedicarse a las canciones de rock de los años 90!

Esta semana, permítanme completar el ciclo con una canción de rock más de los años 90, ¡aunque no tan conocida y recordada como las dos primeras! En 1995, un grupo de jóvenes australianos de 15 años lanzaron un álbum de hard rock... para sorpresa de todos, el álbum "Frogstomp" de Silverchair fue realmente muy bueno considerando lo jóvenes que eran los miembros de la banda, ¡y vendió más de 2 millones de copias!

Una canción que parecía particularmente oscura y conmovedora para que la escribieran niños de 15 años es “Suicidal Dream”, que aparentemente se inspiró en las luchas del propio cantante con su salud mental. Al igual que “Wonderwall”, esta canción es muy divertida de tocar solo porque el riff es lo suficientemente oscuro y distintivo como para que sientas que estás retratando toda la energía y el sonido de la canción por ti mismo.
