MUSIC: Tribute to Artists We Lost in 2023 (ENG/ESP): PART 5 - Shane MacGowan (The Pogues)!

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

Let’s get cracking with Number 5 on my list: Shane MacGowan!

Now, this is the person on the list that I would not ever have heard of it is wasn’t for HIVE! Shortly after starting HIVE, I did a series of 30 posts where I took cover requests from the previous post’s comment section and gave 50% of the post rewards to the winning request whose song I covered.

Sometimes, when I was feeling ambitious and brave, and a lot of requests had come in, I landed up doing a second cover and giving the account that requested it a further 20% of the post rewards – one such time was when @celticheartbeat requested “Irish Rover”, and suggested I watch the version that was sung by a combination of The Dubliners and the Pogues! Up until that point I had never heard of Shane MacGowan and his band the Pogues!

Shane MacGowan was an Irish singer-songwriter, and was famous for fronting the Pogues – a band that combined Irish/Celtic traditional music with a punk flavour (if you can believe it!) Here is the version of “Irish Rover” that I was referring to, where you can compare Shane MacGowan’s (the one with the awful teeth!) intense style to a more traditional style of the Dubliner’s Ronnie Drew…

Shane MacGowan was famous for battling alcohol and drug addiction throughout his life. Nevertheless, he is referred to as “one of music’s greatest lyricists”, and he stood out even in a country with magnificent musicians like Ireland (Van Morrison, U2, Sinead o’Connor, Enya, etc…)

The song I’d like to try, is “Dirty Old Town”, a song that the Pogues didn’t write, but made entirely their own as you can see here:

Mirando hacia 2023, fallecieron bastantes compositores y músicos famosos. Pensé en hacer una serie de publicaciones semanales sobre algunos de ellos, así como intentar cubrir una o dos de las canciones que los hicieron tan famosos.

Empecemos con el número 5 de mi lista: ¡Shane MacGowan!

Ahora, esta es la persona en la lista de la que nunca habría oído hablar si no fuera por HIVE. Poco después de iniciar HIVE, hice una serie de 30 publicaciones en las que tomé solicitudes de portada de la sección de comentarios de la publicación anterior y otorgué el 50 % de las recompensas de la publicación a la solicitud ganadora cuya canción cubrí.

Shane MacGowan era un cantautor irlandés y era famoso por encabezar los Pogues, una banda que combinaba música tradicional irlandesa/celta con un sabor punk (¡si puedes creerlo!).
