HIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL Week 62 First Round (ENG-ESP): "House of the Rising Sun" Bob Dylan / The Animals

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you a small coastal village in the Garden Route about 7 hours from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 62 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival! It’s beautiful outside, so let me sing near the outside fireplace while my baby daughter has a nap… (again…)!

Last week I did an acoustic cover of “All Along the Watchtower”. This was a song that was originally written by Bob Dylan, but then more famously covered by Jimi Hendrix. Its riff is one of the most recognisable in rock-and-roll, and it is definitely a standard song to know… in describing how the early blues became electrified rock music in the 1960s!

Today I would like to do another song in Bob Dylan’s repertoire that became much more famous when somebody else did a cover of it… only this time, Bob Dylan didn’t write it either!

Yes, today I’m talking about the song “House of the Rising Sun”! Ah yes, surely any guitar player must know this one as one of the first songs they learn for some reason… despite it having more than 3 or 4 chords. I don’t know why – perhaps it’s just that good a song???

I am a massive fan of Bob Dylan and so are my parents, so I remember enjoying watching the documentary about Bob Dylan called “No Direction Home” that talks about his early career and influences. Well, apparently when Bob Dylan arrived in Greenwhich Village to start trying to make it as a musician, he watched an excellent performer called Dave van Ronk perform what was supposed to be an old traditional folk song called “House of the Rising Sun”, except Dave van Ronk has given the song new life by arranging it to the chunky, distinctive chord changes that we all recognise today (the song used to be much more boring and croony… hahaha!).

According to Dave van Ronk, Bob Dylan came up to him one day and asked if he would mind if he recorded “House of the Rising Sun” in the style that he had become used to watching Dave van Ronk play it… Dave replied that he was actually planning to record his version himself… to which Bob Dylan replied “Uh Oh” (It was already too late and the song was released on Bob Dylan’s debut album after signing with Columbia Records in 1962).

However, the song didn’t become a massive hit until The Animals added the distinctive organ to the Dave van Ronk / Bob Dylan arrangement in 1964… and it is their version that has basically become the standard to how we all love to play this song to this day. So ultimately, Bob Dylan stole something, but it wasn’t long before it was stolen from him, along with most of the spoils! Hahaha, luckily, as we all know, Bob Dylan went on to write many fantastic songs… many of which have also been covered relentlessly, including the one I did last week… and to keep a theme going for this three week cycle, probably my entry for next week as well!
