A special greeting to the members of this beautiful community, a pleasure to be here again to share my experiences in the wide world of architecture and civil works. Today I would like to tell you about a majestic work, which undoubtedly raised the quality of life of the community of San Jacinto, Merida - Venezuela. It is the: Trolcable Domingo Peña Mass Transportation System.

Un saludo especial a los miembros de esta bonita comunidad, un placer estar nuevamente aquí para compartir mis experiencias en el amplio mundo de la arquitectura y las obras civiles. El día de hoy quisiera hablarles de una obra majestuosa, que sin duda alguna elevó la calidad de vida de la comunidad de San Jacinto, Mérida - Venezuela. Se trata del: Sistema de Transporte Masivo Trolcable Domingo Peña.

Can you imagine leaving your work, exhausted by the daily workday and not being able to get home, as fast as we would like, because first you must form a long waiting line to take the bus and then travel the road for an hour or more, depending on traffic conditions at rush hour, get to your community at night and if that were not enough to deal with insecurity, this only if you have a good day, because many times it is very likely that you do not get the bus and must walk several kilometers down a hill full of danger. Exhausting, isn't it?

This was the routine of thousands of people living in the Chama Basin (San Jacinto, el Chama, el Arenal among other sectors), who worked in the center of Merida. I remember seeing this scenario, day after day, because the public transportation system did not cover the population demand of this area. In addition, this caused traffic congestion and the scenario that was experienced in this avenue detracted harmony to the place from the social, urban, tourist and even environmental point of view. That is why I think that this work improved the quality of life of these people, since they can reach their community from downtown Merida in less than five minutes, thanks to the construction of this cable car.

The construction process of this work began around 2010, at that time I walked a lot through this area and I was very curious about all the work that was being done here, because construction is one of my great passions, but I could not see too much because they placed zinc perimeter sheets for safety reasons. I remember the excitement that was felt in the city for its inauguration in 2012, many people made use of the cable car just to live the experience, however, I never had the opportunity, I only knew the terrace, but not its interior facilities, until a few days ago, when I was passing with my family through this avenue and we decided to take a few minutes to admire this work, show my little son the cabins and of course enjoy the beautiful view, which offers us the viewpoint.

Se imaginan salir de su trabajo, agotados por la jornada diaria y no poder llegar a casa, tan rápido como lo deseamos, porque primero debes formar una larga fila de espera para tomar el autobús y después recorrer la carretera por una hora o más, dependiendo de las condiciones del tránsito en horas pico, llegar a tu comunidad en la noche y por si fuera poco lidiar con la inseguridad, esto solo si tienes un buen día, porque muchas veces es muy probable que no logres tomar el autobús y debas bajar caminando varios kilómetros por una cuesta llena de peligros. ¿Agotador, verdad?

Esta era la rutina de miles de personas que viven en la Cuenca del Chama (San Jacinto, el Chama, el Arenal entre otros sectores), que trabajaban en el centro merideño. Recuerdo ver este escenario, día tras día, porque el sistema de transporte público no cubría la demanda poblacional de esta zona. Además, esto ocasionaba, congestión del tránsito y el escenario que se vivía en esta avenida le restaba armonía al lugar desde el punto de vista social, urbano, turístico e incluso ambiental. Es por esto que pienso que esta obra mejoro la calidad de vida de estas personas, ya que pueden llegar a su comunidad desde el centro de Mérida, en menos de cinco minutos, gracias a la construcción de este teleférico.

El proceso de construcción de esta obra comenzó alrededor del año 2010, en esa época yo transitaba mucho por esta zona y me llenaba de mucha curiosidad todos los trabajos que aquí se estaban realizando, pues la construcción es una de mis grandes pasiones, pero no podía ver demasiado porque colocaron láminas perimetrales de zinc por razones de seguridad. Recuerdo la algarabía que se sintió en la ciudad por su inauguración en el año 2012, muchas personas hacían uso del teleférico solo por vivir la experiencia, sin embargo, nunca tuve la oportunidad, solo conocía la terraza, pero no sus instalaciones interiores, hasta hace unos días, que pasaba con mi familia por esta avenida y decidimos tomarnos unos minutos para admirar esta obra, mostrarle a mi pequeño hijo las cabinas y por supuesto disfrutar de la hermosa vista, que nos ofrece el mirador.

From the road, you can only see the terrace, which is quite wide and has recreational purposes, on it is built some administrative offices of the Trolcable system and we find a beautiful colorful sign that says: I love Mérida. As you approach the protective metal railing, you begin to feel a strong breeze and a wind that makes you connect even more with the experience, as we approach it, we can enjoy a very beautiful natural landscape as we can see in the small video and images, from here you can see the route of the cable car cabins and the arrival station located in San Jacinto.

Desde la carretera, solo puedes ver la terraza, la cual es bastante amplia y tiene fines recreativos, sobre ella está construida algunas oficinas administrativas del sistema Trolcable y encontramos un bello letrero de colores que dice: Yo amo a Mérida. A medidas que te acercas a la baranda protectora de metal, comienzas a sentir una fuerte brisa y un viento que hace que te conectas aún más con la experiencia, al acercarnos a ella, podemos disfrutar de un paisaje natural muy hermoso como podemos ver en el pequeño video y las imágenes, desde acá se aprecia el recorrido de las cabinas del teleférico y la estación de llegada ubicada en San Jacinto.

It is a work of great importance, which combined the work of different careers such as architecture, civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, together with geotechnics and urban planning. I was very struck by how fast the ride is, we took the time and each cabin takes between 150 to 180 seconds to reach its destination, it is really incredible, how fast this journey is given, the cabins wobble giving a visual sensation that can give you a little fear, especially if you are afraid of heights, fortunately I have learned that flexibility in these cases is good. These small cabins are suspended on tensioned cables and a pulley system, powered by electricity, supported on huge steel towers and piles. I also observed that all along the slope, anchored walls were built to protect the infrastructure. According to the newspaper La Voz, the total section of the cable car is 443 linear meters with an altitude of 147 meters.

Es una obra de gran envergadura, que combino el trabajo de distintas carreras como la arquitectura, la ingeniería civil, eléctrica y mecánica, junto a la geotecnia y el urbanismo. Me llamó mucho la atención lo rápido que es su recorrido, tomamos el tiempo y cada cabina tarda en llegar a su destino entre 150 a 180 segundos, es realmente increíble, lo rápido que se da este trayecto, las cabinas tambalean dando una sensación visual que puede darte un poco de miedo, en especial si temes a las alturas, menos mal que he aprendido que la flexibilidad en estos casos es buena. Estas pequeñas cabinas se encuentran suspendidas sobre cables tensados y un sistema de poleas, que funcionan con electricidad, apoyados sobre enormes torres de aceros y pilotes. También observé que en todo el talud, se construyó muros anclados, para proteger la infraestructura. Según el diario la voz, el tramo total del teleférico es de 443 metros lineales con una altitud de 147 metros.

Las oficinas administrativas, que se encuentran sobre esta terraza, tienen un diseño arquitectónico bastante moderno e innovador en forma cilíndrica con paneles de aluminio, que llaman bastante la atención. Estas ya se encontraban cerradas, incluso ya no estaban vendiendo los boletos en el momento que fuimos, pero nos dejaron entrar y ver las instalaciones interiores antes de que cerraran por completo.

The administrative offices, which are located on this terrace, have a very modern and innovative architectural design in a cylindrical shape with aluminum panels, which attract a lot of attention. These were already closed, they were not even selling tickets at the time we went, but they let us enter and see the interior facilities before they closed completely.

The first thing we find are some concrete stairs, which leads us to this large building, which is all in clean work, except for some walls that are lined with ceramic tiles. Upon entering we have another set of stairs, which takes you to the boarding area and a corridor that leads to the different administrative and maintenance areas, it is quite wide. I was able to observe huge rectangular reinforced concrete columns, as well as the beams, and from here we can see that the ceiling slab and mezzanine is formed by coffered ceilings. It seems to me that this is the ideal type of slab for this structure, since these slabs tend to be lighter.

Lo primero que encontramos son unas escaleras de concreto, que nos lleva a este gran edificio, el cual todo se encuentra en obra limpia, con excepción de algunas paredes que están revestidas con baldosas de cerámica. Al entrar tenemos otros sistemas de escaleras, que te lleva al lugar de embarque y un pasillo que conduce a los distintos espacios administrativos y de mantenimiento, es bastante amplio. Logre observar enormes columnas rectangulares de concreto armado, al igual que las vigas, y desde aquí podemos apreciar que la losa de techo y entrepiso está formada por casetones. El cual me parece que este es el tipo de losa ideal para esta estructura, ya que estas losas tienden a ser más ligeras.

The interior lighting is provided by several LED lamps and also by natural lighting, thanks to a skylight on one side. I managed to get a close look at the cabins and the workers told me that each of them has a capacity of 8 people, they seem to be quite light and are surrounded by glass windows that allow them to have a better visual panoramic view to the users. The main pulley is huge, it works with electricity, the system is quite environmentally friendly, as it does not emit gases or carbon dioxide.

La iluminación del interior, está dado por varias lámparas led y también por la iluminación natural, gracias a una claraboya que se encuentra en un lateral. Logré ver de cerca las cabinas y los trabajadores me dijeron que cada una de ellas tiene una capacidad de 8 personas, parecen ser bastante livianas y está rodeada por ventanas de vidrio que les permite tener una mejor panorámica visual a los usuarios. La polea principal es enorme, funciona con electricidad, el sistema es bastante amigable con el medio ambiente, ya que no emite gases ni dióxido de carbono.
