My definitive inclination towards music took place when I was leading an amateur gaita group, which in spite of that characteristic did a very professional job, which led us to alternate in a couple of occasions with some of the most famous groups of the genre and to make a worthy representation there. All this taking into account that this group interpreted the gaita in the most traditional way, precisely at the time when the maximum modernization of this type of music began, with the inclusion of bass, congas, drums, keyboards, electric guitars and much more. At that time, we were advocating for the more traditional style and many of the lyrics of our songs (including my own compositions) talked about that, about defending the original, traditional sound.... Precisely what this song is about forty years later, when it says that the gaita is played "on foot", it refers to its more vernacular form.

That time corresponds to my leap to professionalization in music and of course, it left a very deep mark on me. Although since that time I have not learned new gaitas, with this one I had a debt, because since it came out (2008) I had thought about learning it, because I really liked its message and the very nice way of approaching the lyrics.

Its author and the one who sang the famous version of the VHG group, was Luis Escaray. He used to say that during one of the group's performances, the power went out and they stopped playing and it was a member of the audience who shouted: "Come on and play it by foot, like they used to play it before" and that's where the inspiration came from. For the same reason, although the original recording has no piano or bass, in the last bars they say: "the light came back" and these two instruments are integrated for the last bars of the song.

As an additional funny anecdote, I would like to tell you that the acronym VHG stands for "Venezuela habla gaiteando" (Venezuela speaks in gaita), which in turn paraphrases a song by Conny Méndez from Caracas, entitled "Venezuela habla cantando" (Venezuela speaks singing). But the Venezuelan who wastes no time to make jokes and mockery, soon changed it to "Viejitos haciendo gaita" (Old people playing gaita).

Mi inclinación definitiva hacia la música se produjo en tiempos que yo dirigía un grupo de gaitas de aficionados, que a pesar de esa característica hizo un trabajo muy profesional, lo que nos llevó a alternar en un par de ocasiones con algunas de las más famosas agrupaciones del género y hacer allí una representación digna. Todo esto tomando en cuenta que ese grupo interpretaba la gaita de la manera más tradicional, justamente en el momento que empezó la máxima modernización en ese tipo de música, con la inclusión de bajo, congas, batería, teclados, guitarras eléctricas y mucho más. En ese momento, nosotros abogábamos por el estilo más tradicional y muchas de las letras de nuestras canciones (incluyendo composiciones mías) hablaban de eso, de defender el sonido original, tradicional... Justamente lo que cuarenta años más tarde trata esta canción, que cuando dice tocar la gaita "a pie", se refiere a su forma más autóctona.

Esa época se corresponde con mi salto a la profesionalización en la música y por supuesto, dejó una muy honda huella en mí. Aunque desde aquella época no me he aprendido gaitas nuevas, con esta gaita tenía una deuda, pues desde que salió (2008) me había planteado aprendérmela, pues me gustó mucho su mensaje y la forma tan simpática de abordar la letra.

Su autor y quien cantó la versión famosa del grupo VHG, fue Luis Escaray. Él contaba que durante una presentación del grupo, en una oportunidad, se fue la luz y ellos pararon de tocar y fue una persona del público quien gritó: "Dale y tócala a pie, como se tocaba antes" y de allí surgió la inspiración. Por esa misma razón, aunque la grabación original no lleva piano, ni bajo, en los últimos compases dicen: "volvió la luz" y estos dos instrumentos se integran para los últimos compases de la canción.

Como anécdota graciosa adicional, me gustaría contarles que las siglas VHG corresponden a las iniciales de Venezuela habla gaiteando, que a su vez parafrasea un canción del caraqueña Conny Méndez, de título "Venezuela habla cantando". Pero el venezolano que no pierde tiempo para hacer chistes y burlas, pronto lo cambiaron por "Viejitos haciendo gaita".
