Hoy traigo una canción muy especial para mí. Esta canción la compuse hace muchos años para mi grupo de parranda. Los que me siguen, saben que durante más de 30 años cultivé la tradición de llevar parrandas de casa en casa durante el mes de diciembre, como parte de la tradición navideña venezolana (Acá puedes leer más sobre este tema).

En el repertorio navideño en nuestra tierra, se toca tanto el tema a lo divino, como a lo profano. No es solo el canto religioso, sino que son muchas las canciones que tratan sobre las fiestas, el baile, sobre las comidas navideñas y hasta temas de amor.

Como el estilo de nuestro grupo era bastante divertido y alegre, quise hacer una canción satírica y escogí el tema de la gente que siempre se siente enferma de "algo", que tiene todas las enfermedades que existen y las que no también. El título original de la canción fue "La Parranda hipocondríaca", pero todo el mundo la llamó siempre fue "Ay, ay, ay". Así que con este, su nuevo nombre, se las presento hoy.

Today I bring a very special song for me. I composed this song many years ago for my parranda group. Those of you who follow me know that for more than 30 years I cultivated the tradition of taking parrandas from house to house during the month of December, as part of the Venezuelan Christmas tradition (Here you can read more about this subject).

In the Christmas repertoire in our land, both the theme of the divine, as well as the profane, is played. It is not only the religious song, but there are many songs that deal with the holidays, dancing, Christmas meals and even love themes.

As the style of our group was quite fun and cheerful, I wanted to make a satirical song and I chose the theme of people who always feel sick of "something", who have all the diseases that exist and those that don't as well. The original title of the song was " The hypochondriac Parranda", but everybody always called it "Ay, ay, ay". So with this, its new name, I present it to you today.

Creación de la base

Para yo escribir mis arreglos, utilizo un programa maravilloso, que se llama MuseScore, que es libre y de código abierto, que puedes descargar directamente en https://musescore.org/ (Tengo tiempo pendiente de hacer una reseña sobre esta joya).

Además de la posibilidad de crear allí partituras de aspecto completamente profesional, Musescore te permite generar archivos midi. En muchas ocasiones lo hago, para poder darme una idea de cómo va a sonar el arreglo. En muchas ocasiones me ha gustado tanto el resultado en ese formato, que para esta ocasión (por primera vez) decidí crear el midi y usarlo para acompañar la canción. Allí hice el arreglo y creé el midi, como punto de partida para la grabación.

Creating the base

For writing my arrangements, I use a wonderful program, called MuseScore, which is free and open source, that you can download directly from https://musescore.org/ (I have been meaning to do a review of this gem for a while).

In addition to the possibility of creating completely professional looking scores there, Musescore allows you to generate midi files. On many occasions I do this, so that I can get an idea of how the arrangement is going to sound. On many occasions I have liked the result in that format so much, that for this occasion (for the first time) I decided to create the midi and use it to accompany the song. There I made the arrangement and created the midi, as a starting point for the recording.

También para esta fase usé un programa de código abierto, como lo es Ardour. De este programa viene una versión libre como parte de una de las distribuciones de Ubuntu (Ubuntu Studio) y ha resultado una opción maravillosa a la hora de grabar.

Sin embargo, para trabajar con el midi tuve algunos problemas, pues las fuentes de sonido que conseguí, no eran de mucha calidad.

Pero las herramientas que brinda el programa, en cuanto a plugins y efectos, es tan buena que me permitió lograr un sonido muy agradable.

Además de los sonidos midi, solo agregué el acompañamiento del cuatro, como instrumento real, y las voces, que para darle mayor fuerza a la canción, le hice cinco canales de coro.

Recording

Also for this phase I used an open source program, such as Ardour. This program comes in a free version as part of one of the Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu Studio) and it has been a wonderful option for recording.

However, to work with midi I had some problems, because the sound fonts I got, were not of high quality.

But the tools provided by the program, in terms of plugins and effects, is so good that allowed me to achieve a very nice sound.

Besides the midi sounds, I only added the accompaniment of the cuatro, as a real instrument, and the voices, which to give more strength to the song, I made five chorus channels.

Finalmente, para el video, aunque sé que no es demasiado creativo, también quise darle un poco más de movimiento que lo que hago usualmente. Siempre uso el programa Kdenlive (Sí, también es libre y de código abierto), incluso cuando solo se trata de acomodar el principio y el final. Pero me parece una herramienta tan potente, que siempre ha estado a la altura hasta de proyectos bien complejos.

Finally, for the video, although I know it's not too creative, I also wanted to give it a little more movement than I usually do. I always use the program Kdenlive (Yes, it's also free and open source), even when it's just a matter of arranging the beginning and the end. But I find it such a powerful tool, it has always been up to the task of even very complex projects.
