It's called conga or tumba? || ¿Se llama conga o tumba?

Of all the instruments born in Cuba, perhaps the most widely used is the conga or tumbadora, which has been incorporated into countless musical genres throughout the world.

Its original name was "tumba", a word of Bantu origin, which later became "tumbadora", and with the wide diffusion of the conga rhythm (music in which this instrument was used), it began to be called by the same name.

Like most of the drums of the Caribbean region, this instrument originated in Africa, and in its original construction it was the same as many other drums of African descent, that is, they were tree trunks, hollow inside, with a drumhead at one end.

But the conga lived its natural evolution, and soon they began to make it with barrels of wine, cod, or candles.

However, it was a problematic instrument to tune, since this operation had to be done with fire and was very delicate. It was in 1940 that the Cuban percussionist musician "Patato" Valdez, invented the hardware that allowed to tune the leather by means of keys. This was a decisive step to join the great dance orchestras.

The first bandleader to include the tumbadora in his instrumentation was Arsenio Rodriguez, a fundamental musician in the development of Cuban dance music.

This instrument has the task of marking the basic rhythm, and therefore its role in the orchestra is fundamental, since it is the one responsible for "binding" all the rhythms.

So much so, that when recording Salsa, it is usually the first instrument to be recorded, so that it can be the guide for all the others.

Of course, the conga is not always present in Latin rhythms, but because of its strength as the leading instrument for the rest of the orchestra, I also included it in my band.

De los instrumentos que nacieron en Cuba, posiblemente el de mayor proliferación, a nivel mundial, es la conga o tumbadora, que se ha integrado a infinidad de géneros musicales a lo largo y ancho de todo el planeta.

Su nombre originario fue "tumba", palabra de origen bantú, que luego se fue transformando en tumbadora y que con la amplia difusión del ritmo Conga (música en la cual usaban este instrumento), empezó a ser llamado con este mismo nombre.

Como la mayoría de los tambores de la región caribeña, también este instrumento tiene su origen en África y en su construcción inicial, era igual a muchos otros tambores de ascendencia africana, es decir, eran troncos de árbol, huecos adentro y con un parche en uno de los extremos.

Pero la conga fue viviendo su desarrollo natural y pronto empezaron a hacerla con barriles de vino, de bacalao o de velas.

Sin embargo, era un instrumento problemático para afinar, pues dicha operación había que hacerla con fuego y era muy delicada. Fue en 1940 que el músico percusionista cubano "Patato" Valdez, inventó el herraje que permite afinar los cueros mediante unas llaves. Este fue un paso definitivo para incorporarse a las grandes orquestas bailables.

El primer director de orquesta en incluir la tumbadora en su instrumentación, fue el "cieguito" Arsenio Rodríguez, músico fundamental en el desarrollo de la música cubana bailable.

Este instrumento tiene la tarea de marcar el ritmo base y, por lo tanto, su papel es fundamental en la orquesta, pues es el que se encarga de "amarrar" todo el ritmo.

Tanto es así, que cuando se va a grabar salsa, por lo general, es este el primer instrumento que se graba, para que sea el guía para todos los demás.

Por supuesto, en los ritmos latinos no siempre está presenta la conga, pero por esa fuerza que marca, al ser el instrumento guía del resto de la orquesta, yo también lo incluí en mi banda.
