A Salsero trumpet? || ¿Una trompeta salsera?

In spite of the time that the trumpet has been part of the groups of Caribbean music, of salsa, there are many who think that it is a "new" invention.

The integration of this instrument to the popular music, is a phenomenon that took place, mainly, thanks to the fact that many popular musicians were formed (musically) within the martial bands. This fact brought about that this instrument, little by little, was integrated to the traditional manifestations, in which these musicians also used to participate.

Cuba, which has an amazing and enviable musical tradition, did not escape this phenomenon and many band instruments became part of the sound of traditional Cuban music.

One of the oldest forms, which has an instrumentation almost as extensive as a classical orchestra, is the danzón, which is also the "father" of many Cuban musical forms.

But beyond this case, the trumpet had already been integrated into the son, by the beginning of the 20th century. This is how we find this instrument as part of the Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñero, in their recordings of 1920. That pure sound of the trumpet in the son, accompanied by the Cuban tres, is a classic of Caribbean music.

It is there on the island that its massification began, that is how, among many other formats", the concept of Sonora was born, whose characteristic sound is the melody carried by two trumpets.

Names like Félix Chapotín, "Chocolate" Armenteros, and much more recently, Luis "Perico Ortiz" or "Arturo Sandoval", are a reference in these musical genres.

During the more than 40 years that I have been directing the musical group Los Cañoneros, I have had the pleasure of writing arrangements for this instrument and I have also been fortunate to have worked with great trumpet stars, such as Josué Silva, who was our first trumpet player and then, for many years with Rafael Rey, who is a legend, both in this instrument and in salsa; and for many years with Andrés Romero, better known as "Tapón", one of the greatest exponents of the instrument in Venezuela.

That has given me the possibility to familiarize myself with the trumpet and discover its potential, both in the nuanced parts, as well as in the power parts. It is this knowledge that led me to the determination to include this instrument in the endowment that accompanies my musical project in salsa.

A pesar del tiempo que tiene la trompeta formando parte de las agrupaciones de música caribeña, de la salsa, hay muchos que piensan que se trata de un invento "nuevo".

La integración de este instrumento a la música popular, es un fenómeno que se produjo, principalmente, gracias a que muchos músicos populares se formaron (musicalmente) dentro de las bandas marciales. Ese hecho trajo consigo, que este instrumento, poco a poco se fuera integrando a las manifestaciones tradicionales, en la que estos músicos también solían participar.

Cuba, que tiene una tradición musical asombrosa y envidiable, no escapó a este fenómeno y muchos instrumentos de las bandas, pasaron a engrosar el sonido de la música tradicional cubana.

Una de las formas más antiguas, que cuenta con una instrumentación casi tan extensa como una orquesta clásica, es el danzón, que es además "padre" de muchas formas musicales cubanas.

Pero más allá de este caso, la trompeta ya se había integrado al son, para comienzos del siglo XX. Es así que encontramos este instrumento como parte del Septeto Nacional Ignacio Piñero, en sus grabaciones de 1920. Ese sonido puro de la trompeta en el son, acompañado del tres cubano, es un clásico de la música del Caribe.

Allí en la isla empezó su masificación, es así como, entre muchos otros formatos", nace el concepto de Sonora, cuyo sonido característico es la melodía llevada por dos trompetas.

Nombres como Félix Chapotín, "Chocolate" Armenteros, y mucho más recientemente, Luis "Perico Ortiz" o "Arturo Sandoval", son una referencia en estos géneros musicales.

Durante los más de 40 años que llevo dirigiendo el grupo musical Los Cañoneros, he tenido el gusto de escribir arreglos para este instrumento y he tenido también la fortuna de haber trabajado con grandes estrellas de la trompeta, como lo han sido Josué Silva, quien fue nuestro primer trompetista y luego, muchos años junto a RafaelRey, que es toda una leyenda, tanto en ese instrumento, como dentro de la salsa; y muchos años también, al lado de Andrés Romero, mejor conocido como "Tapón", uno de los máximos exponentes del instrumento en Venezuela.

Eso me ha dado la posibilidad de familiarizarme con la trompeta y descubrir su potencial, tanto en las partes matizadas, como en las de fuerza. Es ese conocimiento el que me llevó a la determinación de incluir a este instrumento en la dotación que acompaña mi proyecto musical en la salsa.
