The lyrics are personal, intimate and evocative. Armstrong sings about his memories of his father and how he misses him every September. The song also talks about the acceptance of death and the passage of time. Death is an everyday and human act, and it affects us when it is close. A few years ago I did an essay at the University about transcendence. Transcendence is born from the need of men and women to have hope. Personally, I believe in the Resurrection. It is that certainty that after this life comes another and in better conditions. It's a matter of faith, it's not something motivated by science. People need to know that there is something more after this life. Death is not the end, it is just a brief respite from this life. For those who believe in God, there is a redemption of the soul, where body and spirit will be reunited again in a perfect form.
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
