Prayer can be by spoken word. But a personal prayer is as recommended by Jesus in Matt. 6:5-6. In that place, he advised that prayer should not be done as hypocrites who love praying in open places, and in such a way as to be seen by people. Jesus then advised his disciples to pray secretly to God inside their houses.
This suggests that we can pray in the spirit and mind also, as stated in 1Cor. 14:15. We can pray to God without physical voices.
If therefore we are not praying with the congregation, we should do it secretly. God does not want us to make a display of our prayers as hypocrites do.
When we pray in the mind to link with God's mind, none, not even Satan can interfere. The mind is not known by Satan. Jer. 17:9-10 says the Lord is the one that searches the heart. So, only God knows what is in our hearts. If we pray secretly, Satan would not know what we are praying for.
